World Cup: 5 record set by African giants Morocco with victory over Scotland

The Morocco national team, the Atlas Lions continue to rewrite history in the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
The top four finishers in the 2022 edition in Qatar, a record for an African nation, have since added more records to their feats after the gusty 1-0 victory over Scotland on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Boston Stadium.
The hard-earned victory leaves Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad second in Group C with 4 points, the same as Brazil, who tops it on goal difference after a huge 3-0 win over Haiti.
The feat sees the Maghreb nation on the precipice of qualification for the Round of 32 ahead of their final group encounter against Haiti.
Tournament record
PSG defender Achraf Hakimi and attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari carved out individual tournament records during the match.
While Saibari’s opener just after 71 seconds was a first of his own, the 2026 UEFA Champions League winner also shattered the record for the most FIFA World Cup appearances by any African player with his 12th appearance on the global stage.

Saibari’s finish was a record breaker: among the fastest so far at FIFA World Cup 2026 and Morocco’s fastest ever at the global showpiece. Paraguay’s Matías Galarza scored the fastest goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finding the net against Türkiye in just 64 seconds.
The attacking talent also became just the second African player to score in each of his first two appearances at the World Cup after Egypt’s Mohamed Salah (against Russia and Saudi Arabia in 2018).
He also went close to a World Cup double after hitting a deflected shot off the bar after Bilal El Khannouss broke down the left wing and whipped in a low cross.
On continental achievement, the Moroccans have now made a new continental record for passes completed during the clash. With 601 complete passes ranking as the most by an African team in a FIFA World Cup match on record since 1966.
Longest- unbeaten record
They also boast the long-standing unbeaten record in the competition finals after becoming the first team from the continent to go unbeaten in six consecutive World Cup group-stage matches.
Meanwhile, the team also recorded the joint most wins by an African team at the World Cup (6) along with Ghana. Ghana, who previously had won only five games in 16 games at the global stage, achieved the feat after the 1-0 win over Panama, lifting their victories at the global stage to six, joint with Nigeria, who have as many wins in 21 games.
Morocco’s sixth win came in their 24th game at the FIFA World Cup, and the nation remains one goal away from breaking the record for Africa’s highest-scoring World Cup team (23).
