TRIONDA: Design behind unique FIFA World Cup official match ball
By Joel Masibo, June 16, 2026The FIFA World Cup 2026 features a newly designed official match ball known as TRIONDA, a symbol of unity and innovation that celebrates the historic collaboration between Canada, Mexico, and the United States as co-hosts of football’s biggest tournament.
According to FIFA, the name TRIONDA is derived from the Spanish phrase meaning “three waves,” reflecting the unprecedented partnership of the three North American nations hosting the World Cup together for the first time. The ball’s design incorporates vibrant red, green, and blue colours, each representing one of the host countries.
Unique features
The official match ball also features a distinctive four-panel construction with flowing geometric patterns that mirror the waves referenced in its name. At the centre of the design, the panels form a triangle, symbolising the coming together of the three nations for the global football spectacle.

Further highlighting the unique identity of the hosts, the ball carries national symbols from each country. Canada’s maple leaf, Mexico’s eagle, and a star representing the United States are integrated into the design, while gold detailing serves as a tribute to the prestigious FIFA World Cup Trophy.
Beyond its visual appeal, TRIONDA introduces advanced technology aimed at improving performance and officiating standards. FIFA revealed that the ball’s innovative four-panel structure incorporates deep seams that help maintain stability during flight by ensuring balanced air resistance as it moves through the air.
The surface of the ball also includes embossed icons visible only at close range. These features are designed to enhance grip and control, particularly in wet or humid playing conditions, giving players improved handling when dribbling or striking the ball.
Technology
Technology continues to play a significant role in modern football, and TRIONDA is no exception. The official match ball is equipped with connected-ball technology, including a sophisticated 500Hz motion sensor chip capable of tracking every movement of the ball in real time.

The data collected is transmitted directly to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, providing officials with precise information to support decision-making during matches. FIFA says the technology will be especially useful in evaluating offside situations and other critical incidents throughout the tournament.
The unveiling of TRIONDA marks another step in FIFA’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which is expected to be the largest edition of the tournament in history. Fans will get their first opportunity to witness the ball in competitive action when the tournament kicks off across the three host nations.
With its combination of symbolic design, cutting-edge technology, and tribute to the unity of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, TRIONDA is set to become one of the defining symbols of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
This adds to unique features at the ongoing World Cup, including the viral trend of players wearing pink cleats.
