Spain vs Saudi Arabia: World Cup 2026 preview, team news and key stats
By Joel Masibo, June 21, 2026Spain will be under pressure to secure maximum points when they face Saudi Arabia in their second Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Atlanta Stadium on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The 2010 world champions began their campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against Cape Verde, while Saudi Arabia also settled for a share of the spoils after holding Uruguay to a 1-1 draw.
Spain looking for a response
Expectations were high for Spain heading into the tournament, but their opening display failed to impress. Luis de la Fuente’s men struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and were unable to break down Cape Verde’s defence, leaving them with just one point from their first outing.

The stalemate has increased the importance of Sunday’s clash, with Spain aware that a victory would significantly improve their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds. Another positive result in their final group fixture would likely guarantee qualification.
One of the few bright spots from the opening match was the impact of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona youngster injected energy into Spain’s attack after coming off the bench, and there is growing anticipation that he could be handed a starting role against Saudi Arabia.
Spain’s recent World Cup history has been mixed. Since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, La Roja have failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 in the last two editions and suffered an early group-stage exit in 2014.
Saudi Arabia eye historic upset
The Green Falcons head into the encounter with confidence after producing a spirited performance against Uruguay.

Saudi Arabia took the lead shortly before halftime through defender Abdulelah Al Amri, but a late goal from Maxi Araujo denied them a famous victory. Nevertheless, the result ensured that every team in Group H remains level on one point after the opening round of fixtures.
A positive outcome against Spain would place Saudi Arabia in a strong position ahead of their final group match against Cape Verde.
Historically, Saudi Arabia have never defeated Spain. Their only previous World Cup meeting came in Germany in 2006, where Spain secured a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Juanito. The Spaniards have also emerged victorious in two friendly encounters between the sides.
Saudi Arabia’s finest World Cup achievement remains their Round of 16 appearance in 1994, while their most recent participations in 2018 and 2022 both ended at the group stage.
Team news
Spain are expected to make changes following the underwhelming display against Cape Verde.
Yamal could be promoted to the starting lineup after making his return from a hamstring injury during the opening match. The winger had been sidelined since suffering the setback while playing for Barcelona in late April.
Nico Williams is also pushing for a place in the first eleven after a lively substitute appearance. If selected, Ferran Torres and Gavi may have to settle for places among the substitutes.
Spain have no major new injury concerns, although Victor Munoz remains doubtful because of a lingering hamstring problem.
Saudi Arabia enter the match with a fully fit squad.

Goalscorer Al Amri is expected to retain his place in defence, while captain Salem Al-Dawsari will continue to provide leadership and attacking threat from the flank. The experienced winger has scored 27 goals in 111 appearances for his country.
Up front, Firas Al Buraikan is likely to spearhead the attack once again as he seeks to add to his tally of 15 international goals.
