Ronaldo chases historic World Cup glory as Portugal headlines competitive Group K

By , June 9, 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo’s pursuit of the only major trophy missing from his illustrious career is expected to be one of the standout narratives in Group K at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The group features Portugal, Colombia, DR Congo and tournament newcomers Uzbekistan.

Portugal

Portugal heads into the competition as one of Europe’s strongest sides. Currently ranked fifth globally, Roberto Martinez’s men secured qualification by topping their UEFA qualifying group before lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy.

The Portuguese squad blends seasoned stars with a new generation of talent. Midfield duo Vitinha and Joao Neves arrive fresh from helping Paris Saint-Germain capture the UEFA Champions League crown, while Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva continue to provide leadership and creativity. At the back, Ruben Dias and Nuno Mendes offer stability and top-level experience.

Portugal’s finest World Cup campaign remains its third-place finish in 1966.

Ronaldo is preparing for an unprecedented sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament. The Portuguese captain has already guided his nation to success at UEFA Euro 2016 and helped secure two UEFA Nations League titles. However, a World Cup triumph remains absent from his impressive collection of achievement.

Vitinha has emerged as one of Portugal’s most important midfield operators. The 26-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 2025-26 campaign with PSG, winning both the Champions League and Ligue 1, and is expected to play a central role for his national team.

Colombia

Colombia returns to the World Cup stage after failing to qualify for the 2022 edition. Guided by Argentine tactician Nestor Lorenzo, the South Americans finished third in the CONMEBOL qualification standings and reached the Copa America final in 2024.

The team boasts a mix of experience and attacking flair, spearheaded by Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz and veteran playmaker James Rodriguez.

Colombia’s best performance at a World Cup came in 2014 when it advanced to the quarterfinals.

Diaz has become the driving force behind Colombia’s attack. The 29-year-old netted seven times during qualification and was instrumental in the country’s run to the Copa America final two years ago.

DR Congo

DR Congo is back at the World Cup for the first time in more than five decades, having last appeared in 1974. Their path to qualification included impressive victories over Cameroon, Nigeria and Jamaica during the decisive stages.

The squad features several players with Premier League experience, including forward Yoane Wissa and defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Congolese side has yet to progress beyond the group phase in World Cup history.

Wissa brings valuable experience and attacking threat after establishing himself in England’s top flight. He is expected to lead DR Congo’s offensive efforts in the tournament.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan will be one of the most intriguing teams at the tournament as it prepares for its maiden World Cup appearance. The nation made history by becoming the first Central Asian country to secure qualification for the global showpiece.

The team is coached by former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, who famously led his country to World Cup success in 2006. Uzbekistan booked its place at the finals with games remaining and arrives with a squad built around striker Eldor Shomurodov and defender Abdukodir Khusanov.

Captain Shomurodov is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 44 international goals. The 30-year-old played a crucial role in guiding Uzbekistan to its historic qualification and will carry much of the team’s attacking responsibility.
