Kane targets more World Cup milestones after breaking England’s scoring record

England captain Harry Kane is eager to create more memorable moments at the FIFA World Cup after becoming his country’s highest-ever scorer in the tournament.

The experienced forward reached the landmark during England’s 2-0 victory against Panama on Sunday, June 28, 2026, that secured first place in Group L. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a well-taken volley from a corner before later delivering the cross that Kane converted with a header for his 11th World Cup goal.

That strike moved Bayern Munich forward beyond Gary Lineker’s long-standing England World Cup scoring record (10), which had stood for 36 years.

“It is a proud one for sure,” Kane said after the match. “I spoke before the tournament about the World Cup being the biggest competition we play as professional footballers, so to get to 11 goals is a proud feeling.” He said.

Kane first made his mark on the global stage at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where his six goals earned him the Golden Boot. He added two more goals at the 2022 tournament in Qatar before extending his tally in the current competition.

Lineker’s previous record of 10 World Cup goals came across two editions of the tournament, scoring six times in 1986 to win the Golden Boot before adding four more in Italy four years later.

“I just want to enjoy this moment with the team, enjoy being top of the table,” Kane said. “I never take these moments for granted. Another good milestone to hit and I hope it is not the last one in this tournament,” Kane said.

The 32-year-old also acknowledged that Panama proved to be a tougher opponent than expected despite England controlling much of the contest at New York New Jersey Stadium.

“It was a solid performance again against a tricky side,” the striker said. “They have fast, tricky players and had moments.

“Overall, we controlled it pretty well. In the first half, we were maybe a little bit sloppy in the final third but we got better in the second half. We would have liked to see out the game a little bit easier.” He said. England will face the spirited DR Congo in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.
