Goalkeeper Eloy Room’s heroics help Curaçao secure historic first World Cup point

Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a stunning display between the posts as his side held Ecuador to a goalless draw in their Group E clash at Kansas City Stadium, earning the Caribbean nation its first-ever point at the FIFA World Cup on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

Despite dominating possession and creating a host of scoring opportunities, Ecuador could not find a way past the inspired Room, whose outstanding saves frustrated La Tricolor throughout the contest.

Ecuador’s threat

Ecuador started on the front foot and nearly opened the scoring early when Moisés Caicedo delivered an excellent pass behind the defence for Enner Valencia. The striker found himself through on goal but was denied by Room, who would go on to deliver a memorable performance.

While Ecuador controlled much of the match, Curaçao also posed occasional threats on the counterattack. Leandro Bacuna and Jürgen Locadia exploited spaces left behind by Ecuador’s attacking approach and helped create openings, although the Caribbean side was unable to convert their chances.

As the first half progressed, Ecuador continued to pile pressure on Curaçao’s defence. Wave after wave of attacks tested the Blue Wave backline, but Room remained unbeatable, making several crucial interventions to keep the score level.

The Ecuadorians intensified their search for a breakthrough after the restart. Valencia came close again with a powerful header from a dangerous cross, only for Room to produce another outstanding save.

Ecuador’s frustration grew as they struck the woodwork three times and registered close to 30 attempts on goal. Nevertheless, Curaçao’s disciplined defending and Room’s brilliance ensured the match ended without a goal.

Qualification path

The result guarantees Germany top spot in Group E and a place in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Ecuador, Curaçao and the remaining team in the group will head into the final round of matches still fighting for qualification to the knockout stage.

The stalemate marked only the third scoreless draw in World Cup history involving teams from CONMEBOL and Concacaf. The previous two instances were:

Uruguay 0-0 Mexico (Group Stage, 1966)

Brazil 0-0 Mexico (Group Stage, 2014)

Room steals show

The Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award went to Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room, whose remarkable performance was instrumental in securing a historic result for his nation.
