France vs Senegal: Key stats as familiar foes clash at 2026 World Cup
By Joel Masibo, June 16, 2026France will launch their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey on Tuesday evening, June 16, 2026, when they face Senegal in their opening Group I fixture at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.
The meeting revives memories of one of the tournament’s greatest upsets, when Senegal shocked the reigning world champions 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, a result that marked the beginning of France’s disappointing title defense.
France eye strong start
Among the leading contenders to lift the trophy this summer, France arrive in North America determined to erase the disappointment of their defeat in the 2022 World Cup final.

This tournament will also be the last for head coach Didier Deschamps, who has already confirmed he will step down after the competition, with Zinedine Zidane expected to take over. Deschamps has already cemented his place in football history by winning the World Cup both as a player and a coach, and he now has an opportunity to further enhance his legacy.
The French manager has accumulated 14 World Cup victories during his tenure and could surpass legendary German coach Helmut Schon’s record of 16 wins if Les Bleus enjoy another successful campaign.
France qualified comfortably for the finals, dropping only two points throughout their qualification schedule and securing an eighth straight World Cup appearance. Their consistency on football’s biggest stage has been remarkable, having reached four of the last seven World Cup finals.
Although concerns emerged following a 2-1 friendly defeat to Ivory Coast earlier this month, France responded positively by defeating Northern Ireland 3-1. Their attacking strength has been evident, with the team scoring at least twice in nine of their previous ten matches.
Senegal target giant-killing goal
Senegal enter the tournament unbeaten in qualification and will be making their third consecutive World Cup appearance. The West Africans reached the round of 16 in Qatar four years ago after failing to advance beyond the group stage in Russia in 2018.
The Lions of Teranga remain one of Africa’s strongest sides, having won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021. They also continue to pursue recognition from the 2025 continental championship following ongoing legal proceedings related to CAF’s decision in favor of Morocco.
Under coach Pape Thiaw, Senegal have shown encouraging form in recent months, recording friendly victories over Peru and Gambia. However, their preparations ended on a mixed note after suffering a 3-2 defeat to tournament co-hosts the United States before drawing 0-0 against Saudi Arabia.

The stalemate against Saudi Arabia ended an impressive streak of 17 consecutive matches with a goal, although it also highlighted Senegal’s defensive solidity. The team has recorded five clean sheets in its last seven outings.
For Thiaw, the encounter carries personal significance. He was part of the Senegal squad that stunned France in Seoul during the 2002 World Cup, though he remained on the bench as the late Papa Bouba Diop scored the decisive goal.

Team news
France have received positive news regarding defender William Saliba after concerns over a back problem raised fears he could miss the tournament. The Arsenal centre-back has resumed full training and is expected to be available.
Jules Kounde is also fit despite experiencing a muscle issue during the victory over Northern Ireland, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s recent absence from training was merely precautionary.
Much of the spotlight will fall on captain Kylian Mbappe, who heads into the tournament with 56 international goals. The Real Madrid star is just one goal away from equaling Olivier Giroud’s record as France’s all-time leading men’s scorer.
Senegal, meanwhile, welcome back their talisman Sadio Mane, who missed the 2022 World Cup due to injury. The veteran forward remains the country’s most prolific scorer and will be central to their hopes of causing another upset.
There have been minor fitness concerns in Senegal’s camp. Assane Diao recently missed training because of a knock, Cherif Ndiaye was absent from one session, and Idrissa Gueye trained separately as a precaution. However, none of the issues are believed to be serious.

Nicolas Jackson is expected to lead the attack despite his recent red card in a friendly against Saudi Arabia.
Probable lineups
France:
Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, Theo Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Olise, Doue, Mbappe; Dembele.
Senegal:
Mendy; Diatta, Koulibaly, Niakhate, Diouf; Camara, Pape Gueye; Sarr, Diarra, Mane; Jackson.
Both teams possess significant attacking quality, suggesting an entertaining contest could be in store. France have consistently produced high-scoring matches in recent months, while Senegal have enough firepower to trouble any defense.
Nevertheless, France’s superior depth, experience, and attacking talent may ultimately prove decisive. Mbappe and company are expected to have enough quality to secure all three points, though Senegal should provide a stern challenge.
