Brahim Diaz reveals what fueled Morocco’s World Cup win over Canada

Brahim Diaz expressed his satisfaction after playing a decisive role in Morocco’s commanding 3-0 Round of 16 victory over Canada, saying he is proud to contribute as the Atlas Lions continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 journey.

Morocco have once again established themselves among the tournament’s strongest nations after booking a place in the last eight. The achievement matches their quarter-final appearance at the 2022 World Cup, making them the first African side to reach this stage in two separate editions of the competition.

Morocco’s resilience at the World Cup will be put to test when they face France in the quarter-finals on July 9, 2026.

Their remarkable run in Qatar four years ago ended with a historic semi-final finish, the best performance ever by an African nation at the World Cup. This time, however, the Atlas Lions believe they possess even greater attacking quality, with Diaz proving to be one of their most influential players.

Since making his debut for Morocco in March 2024, the attacking midfielder has become an essential figure in the squad. Against Canada in Houston, he produced two crucial assists as Morocco overcame a determined opponent that had made life difficult throughout the opening stages of the match.

Diaz on what fuelled Morocco

“It’s a dream, for sure, to be experiencing this World Cup, to reach the quarter-finals, to help the team with everything we’re doing and with what I do,” Diaz told FIFA. “But the most important thing is to be in the quarter-finals.”

Diaz also praised his teammates for maintaining belief despite facing a difficult first half against an aggressive Canadian side, revealing that their mentality fueled them to overcome the co-hosts.

“Above all, today’s mindset [stood out], because the first half wasn’t easy; it was tough,” Diaz said. “And in the end, that says a lot about the team, about the attitude we have, and turning things around in situations like this is a very good sign for whatever comes our way.”

Morocco’s success has continued to be built on resilience, determination and defensive organisation, qualities that powered their memorable 2022 campaign. This time, though, the side also boasts Diaz’s creativity in the final third.

With the contest evenly balanced for much of the game, the 26-year-old unlocked Canada’s defence on two swift counter-attacks. His precise pass allowed Azzedine Ounahi to score Morocco’s second goal before another perfectly weighted through ball found Soufiane Rahimi, who added the third to seal the victory.

Proud moment

After both goals, Diaz’s teammates made sure to recognise his contribution, celebrating with the playmaker as well as the scorers.

“They really like me; they have a lot of respect for me,” said Diaz about the celebrations. “They gave me that spotlight after the goal, and I’m happy about that.”

Diaz has now registered four assists in five matches at the 2026 World Cup. Besides his two against Canada, he also created goals for Ismael Saibari during Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil and their 1-0 group-stage victory over Scotland.

Although supporters are beginning to believe Morocco can surpass their historic run in Qatar, Diaz insisted the squad remains grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.

“The truth is that they did a wonderful job at the World Cup in Qatar. All the players who aren’t here on the roster now were part of that,” said Diaz. “We’re very happy to be in the quarter-finals, and now we’re going to give it our all for what’s ahead.” He added.
