Tuchel defends England’s World Cup squad after big names snub
England boss Thomas Tuchel has defended his selection criteria for the Three Lions squad heading to Mexico and the United States for the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to the press on Friday, May 22, 2026, after naming his final 26-man squad, the German tactician stated that team spirit and commitment to duty were the most influential factors in his decision-making, rather than simply picking individually talented players.
The coach reassured England fans that culture overrides any individual brilliance of players as he seeks to assemble a highly competitive team.
Committed players
“I can assure every fan that we have 26 players who are 100 per cent committed. We are building the best possible team, which doesn’t necessarily mean just collecting the 26 most talented individuals. Teams win championships, it is as simple as that, and what we are trying to achieve this summer can only be achieved as a team, he said.”
“We chose a balanced squad: three goalkeepers, nine defenders for four positions, seven midfielders for three positions, and seven strikers for three positions.”
Tuchel reiterated the readiness of the selected players to buy into the team’s cause and fly the nation’s football heritage high.
Arsenal trio Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze are among the players called up to the team, joining Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Ivan Toney, and skipper Harry Kane in the team’s offensive arsenal.

“I can assure every fan in the country we have committed players who know their roles, are ready to accept their roles on and off the pitch, and are ready to commit to the idea of team spirit and be unselfish,” he added.
2022 World Cup
The German trainer, who previously managed Chelsea in the Premier League, will be eager to improve on England’s quarter-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they were eliminated after a tight 2–1 loss to eventual runners-up, France.

The Three Lions have been placed in Group L alongside Panama, Ghana, and European rivals Croatia in the 2026 edition in America.
Among the major misses form his squad include United’s vice skipper Harry Maguire, who had been a mainstay under previous coach Gareth Southgate.
Midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and striker Danny Welbeck, who enjoyed improved runs with their EPL clubs Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, did not make the cut.
