Harambee Stars’ Timothy Ouma helps Charlton fight back to extend unbeaten run
By Joel Masibo, September 3, 2026Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma played a key role as Charlton Athletic recovered from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw away to West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night, September 2, 2026, preserving their unbeaten beginning to the Sky Bet Championship season.
Ouma was introduced in the 60th minute as manager Nathan Jones made a triple change following Callum Styles’ opener for West Brom. The Kenyan international’s arrival added fresh energy to Charlton’s attack as the visitors switched their shape in search of a way back into the contest.
Charlton eventually found their reward through Tyreece Campbell, who struck in the 69th minute to register his fourth goal of the campaign.
The point moved Jones’ team level with the leaders at the top of the Championship table and capped an impressive response after West Brom had taken control of the game.
Jones made three alterations to the side that defeated Preston North End 1-0 at the weekend, handing full league debuts to Tyler Bindon, Alan Mwamba and summer recruit Millenic Alli.
The opening 45 minutes produced little in the way of clear opportunities. West Brom controlled much of the possession but struggled to seriously trouble Charlton goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Okonkwo was forced into one notable save before the interval, reacting well to keep out Isaac Price after the hosts won possession following a Charlton mistake.
Charlton created little themselves, with Max O’Leary dealing comfortably with a deflected effort from Alli. Campbell and Alli also had attempts blocked as the first half ended goalless.
West Brom introduced Rabby Nzingoula at the break and immediately looked more dangerous. Just seconds after the restart, Price moved inside from the left before sending a shot across goal which took a deflection off a Charlton player and went out for a corner.
Okonkwo was again required in the 58th minute, making a superb stop to his right to deny Nzingoula.
The resulting corner, however, finally broke Charlton’s resistance. Tyler Bindon headed away a deep delivery, but the clearance landed for Styles, who unleashed a powerful left-footed effort from outside the area that gave Okonkwo no opportunity to save.
The goal came moments after Jones had prepared to make three substitutions. The Charlton boss went ahead with his changes, bringing on Ivan Mesík, Ouma and Joe Rankin-Costello.
The tactical adjustment immediately gave the visitors greater attacking impetus. Ouma delivered a cross towards the far post, where Mesík headed the ball back into the danger area. Charlton were close to an equaliser, but a West Brom defender intervened before Miles Leaburn could finish.
Charlton did not have to wait long.
In the 69th minute, Rankin-Costello carried the ball forward before finding Mesík on the left. Leaburn competed for the wing-back’s high cross, and the loose ball eventually dropped to Campbell.
The winger kept his composure and finished with his left foot to bring Charlton level.
With momentum now on their side, the Addicks pushed for a second goal and looked capable of completing the comeback. West Brom, though, held firm and neither team could produce a winning goal during the closing stages.
The draw means Charlton remain unbeaten after their opening league fixtures and will have little time to recover, with another away assignment against Stoke City coming up on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
