Popular football commentator Diblo Kaberia dies

The Kenyan sports fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran journalist Diblo Kaberia, whose contribution to sports reporting left a lasting mark on the industry.

Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed led the tributes following news of Kaberia’s death on Sunday, May 24, 2026, describing him as a passionate and dedicated journalist who served the profession with distinction.

“It is with deep sorrow that we learn of the passing of Diblo Kaberia, a respected sports journalist, who was very passionate about his craft,” Hussein said in his condolence message.

Kaberia built a reputation as one of the country’s committed sports reporters, earning respect from colleagues, athletes, administrators and fans through his coverage of Kenyan sports over the years. His work helped shine a spotlight on various sporting disciplines and inspired many upcoming journalists.

Hussein noted that Kaberia’s impact in sports journalism would continue to be felt even after his passing.

“His contributions to sports journalism will be remembered and missed,” he added.

The FKF boss also extended his sympathies to Kaberia’s family, friends and members of the media industry during the difficult period.

“Sincere condolences to his family and the entire media fraternity, may his soul rest in peace,” Hussein concluded.

Diblo Kaberia, affectionately known as “El Mago” (The Magician), was a celebrated Swahili football commentator on Radio Jambo. Renowned for his infectious laughter, sharp football analysis, and hilarious self-praise, he was best known for his iconic on-air chemistry with fellow presenter Fred Arocho. Diamomd Okusimba and Mzee Toldo Qurya.

Shortly after the news of his demise was confirmed, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi joined the country’s sports community in mourning one of Kenya’s dedicated football commentator.

“For years, Diblo Kaberia Elmago reigned supreme as the king of football commentary. With a magnetic voice, unmatched storytelling, sharp wit, and an extraordinary command of the beautiful game, he turned every match into a living experience; keeping football fans captivated through his humor, mastery of statistics, and deep understanding of teams and players,” Mwangi said.

“Diblo’s voice echoed in homes, matatus, stadiums, and hearts across the nation; a familiar companion to countless football moments. Kenya has lost not only an exceptional broadcaster, a devoted family man but a consummate professional whose passion elevated sports commentary to an art. Though the microphone has fallen silent, the legacy he built will continue to resonate for generations. His unforgettable voice, infectious passion, and immense contribution to football commentary will remain etched in Kenya’s sporting history.” The PS added.
