Nairobi United’s CAF woes continue as Wydad AC claim narrow Confederation Cup win
By William Muthama, February 8, 2026Nairobi United’s difficult CAF Confederation Cup campaign continued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, after the city side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Moroccan giants Wydad AC at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Wydad entered the contest level on points with Maniema Union and Azam FC, but quickly showed why they are considered one of the tournament favourites.
They dominated possession in the opening stages, dictating the tempo and forcing Nairobi United to defend deep.
Former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech was central to Wydad’s early dominance, dropping into midfield to spray accurate passes and test the Nairobi backline.
Despite being under pressure, Nairobi United had moments to change the game. Lesley Otieno came close midway through the first half after picking up a loose ball and shooting from distance, only for Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid to parry the effort away.
At the other end, Oduor remained busy, denying headers and free kicks as Wydad continued to push forward. Ziyech’s deliveries from set pieces caused constant anxiety, but Nairobi United held firm to go into the break on level terms.
Late drama decides contest
Wydad resumed the second half with renewed intensity, pinning Nairobi United in their own half. Oduor was once again called into action, producing a series of saves to keep his side in the contest as chances fell Wydad’s way.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 88th minute when Walid Nassi delivered a cross from the right, allowing substitute Wissam Ben Yedder to head home and spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
Matters worsened for Nairobi United deep into stoppage time when defender Steve Biko was sent off for a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The victory lifted Wydad AC to 12 points at the top of Group B, three clear of their nearest challengers. Nairobi United, meanwhile, remain winless and face an uphill task in their remaining fixtures as their CAF woes continue.
