Moses Shumah: The inevitable hero of Zambian league champions Power Dynamos
By Luke Oluoch, May 4, 2026Kenyan striker Moses Shumah has been the undisputed engine behind Power Dynamos’ dominant 2026 Zambian Super League campaign, establishing himself as one of the most feared talismans to ever grace the league.
Armed with a reputation for goals from the Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz, Shumah entered the Zambian frontier with quiet potential.
While his predecessors had achieved greatness in the country, the pressure was on the young attacker to match, if not surpass, their feats. Shumah, however, had his own plans.
Rise of the ‘inevitable hero’
A staggering run of goalscoring form saw the Kenyan lead his side to the league title in his debut season.
Beyond the team accolades, his individual numbers were historic, earning him the moniker of the ‘inevitable hero’ in Kitwe.
His journey began in the CAF Champions League, where he made his mark with several goals before the team’s group-stage exit. However, his most fearsome run occurred on the domestic front as Oswald Mutapa’s side fought to defend their crown.

The goalscoring responsibility fell squarely on Shumah, who arrived in Zambia after topping the Kenyan Premier League charts with 17 goals.
Acting as the focal point of the attack, Shumah was clinical rather than flashy. He found his rhythm early, netting a brace on September 13, 2025, in a win over Napsa Stars, sparking a relentless scoring streak.
Powering Dynamos to the title
By the mid-season mark, Shumah had already surged to the top of the league’s scoring charts. He solidified his status as the most prolific Kenyan striker abroad, and by March 5, 2026, another brace against Green Buffaloes brought him within one goal of the league leader, Albert Kangwanda.

As the season entered the final stretch, Shumah took a stranglehold on the Golden Boot race. His form reached a fever pitch in April 2026 when he hit the 20-goal mark, becoming the first player in eight years to reach that milestone in the Zambian top flight.
Chasing history
By mid-April, Shumah was no longer just competing with his contemporaries; he was chasing history. He set his sights on the league’s all-time record of 26 goals in a single season.
His success inevitably drew comparisons to the Kenyan legends who paved the way in Zambia. The league has long been a playground for Kenyan excellence, featuring stars like David ‘Calabar’ Owino, John Makwata, and the iconic Jesse Were.
The Legacy of Jesse Were
Much like Shumah, Jesse Were was a prolific force during his heyday with Zesco United.
The former Tusker and Harambee Stars striker was crowned the club’s leading scorer across multiple seasons. A clinical finisher, Were won eight trophies during his storied tenure with the high-flying champions, including four league titles in five years.
While the league Golden Boot narrowly eluded him at times, Were scored nearly 100 goals for ZESCO in all competitions, cementing his status as the club’s record goalscorer before moving to Kansanshi Dynamos and eventually returning home to join Kenya Police FC.
Now, with a league title and a record-breaking season under his belt, Shumah has ensured that the Kenyan legacy of prolific goalscorers in Zambia continues.
