Manchester United vs Leeds: Carrick provides early team news ahead of Monday night action

By , April 9, 2026

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has provided an update on Manchester United’s defensive options as the team prepares for Monday night’s, April 13, 2026, eagerly anticipated clash against Leeds United.

The Premier League encounter, set for a 20:00 BST kickoff at Old Trafford, will mark United’s first match since their 2-2 stalemate away to Bournemouth on March 20.

Maguire’s absence

Defender Harry Maguire, who recently committed his future to the club by signing a new deal, will not feature in the game after being sent off in that Bournemouth fixture, resulting in a suspension.

There is, however, a boost for the squad with Lisandro Martinez returning to training during the team’s camp in Dublin. The Argentine has been sidelined for the last five matches, making his comeback timely for the Reds.

Speaking in an interview with club media, Carrick highlighted the importance of having players return to fitness during the break. Mason Mount is also back in contention after regaining full fitness, having made a late substitute appearance in the Bournemouth game, his first involvement since January’s Manchester derby.

Elsewhere, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu continues his rehabilitation in Ireland, while Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have rejoined the group after withdrawing from international assignments.

Carrick speaks

“So you were saying about the break, it’s actually worked in our favour in some ways, in terms of getting players back,” Carrick said.

“Mason’s in and around it as well, in training and he’s had that period of time to build that up. To have Licha in and around it again is good. Obviously, Harry’s going to miss the game so we’ve got Licha back around it, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, and we just want to get stronger as a group really. So that’s part of this, trying to use that to do that this week.”

Meanwhile, Leeds United head into the fixture with some concerns despite their recent FA Cup semi-final qualification after beating West Ham United. Midfielder Anton Stach was forced off early in that match, while defender Joe Rodon suffered an ankle issue. Noah Okafor, however, is expected to be available after only experiencing cramp.
