Man Utd ready to open permanent job talks with Carrick after impressive run

By , May 13, 2026

Manchester United are preparing to begin negotiations with Michael Carrick over the possibility of handing him the managerial role on a full-time basis after the current campaign.

The club is expected to formally engage Carrick before their last Premier League fixture away to Brighton & Hove Albion on May 24, 2026. Although the Old Trafford hierarchy has explored alternative managerial options, Carrick remains their leading candidate following an impressive spell as interim boss.

Impressive run

Since taking over temporarily, the former United midfielder has overseen 15 matches, recording 10 victories and three draws while steering the club back into the UEFA Champions League. His performances have reportedly strengthened confidence among club executives, who have been impressed by both the team’s results and his relationship with players and supporters.

United officials are said to value Carrick’s understanding of the club’s traditions, his calm approach in dealing with the media, and the positive atmosphere he has created inside the dressing room. Qualification for next season’s Champions League is also expected to deliver a major financial boost to the club.

Despite Carrick emerging as the frontrunner, Manchester United are still believed to have contacted other high-profile coaches, including Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique. However, several of those options appear increasingly unlikely, leaving Carrick in a strong position to land the job permanently.

Former United defender Gary Neville believes Carrick has earned serious consideration after stabilising the team and winning the trust of both the squad and fans. Neville, however, questioned whether Carrick currently possesses enough top-level managerial experience to guide the club through the demands of domestic and European competition.

“He’s put himself in pole position with what he’s done. There are things that have emerged that will give Manchester United fans comfort that they are in safe hands. Manchester United need some stability. They’ve not had that for the last few years, but he will bring that in the sense that everyone trusts him,” Neville said.

Carrick’s relations

“Fans like him, the players obviously like him. The owners will trust him. Next year, he’s got 55-60 games with the Champions League, and surely they won’t go out in the first rounds of the cup competitions. Then it’s all a different level of management and scrutiny. It’s a lot more challenging. Does he have the experience? Does he have the body of work to rely upon?” Neville spoke about Carrick’s future after the 3-2 win over Liverpool.

A number of United players have publicly shown support for Carrick to remain in charge. Amad Diallo praised the coach’s relationship with the squad and credited him for improving unity within the dressing room. Kobbie Mainoo, Matheus Cunha and Casemiro have also reportedly backed the former midfielder to continue leading the club beyond this season.
