London Marathon hero Sabastian Sawe accorded heroic welcome at JKIA
By Joel Masibo, April 30, 2026Kenya’s athletics excellence was once again thrust into the global spotlight as Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya led the nation in receiving marathon sensation Sebastian Sawe at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday evening, April 29, 2026, following his historic feat at the 2026 London Marathon.
Sawe, who stunned the world by clocking a remarkable 1:59:30 on Sunday, April 26, 2025, became the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon under official race conditions, cementing his place among the greatest long-distance runners in history.
His return to the country was marked with a heroic reception, reflecting the pride and admiration Kenyans hold for his achievement.
Sawe jets back
Speaking during the JKIA, Mvurya described the reception as a befitting tribute to a national hero whose accomplishment has elevated Kenya’s status on the global athletics stage. He emphasised that Sawe’s triumph is not only a personal milestone but also a moment of national pride that reinforces Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running.

“As a country, we stand proud and tall in celebrating his historic achievement,” Mvurya said, noting that Sawe’s success serves as a powerful inspiration to aspiring athletes across the nation. He highlighted the significance of the record-breaking run, describing it as a testament to the resilience, discipline, and determination that define Kenyan athletes.
The Cabinet Secretary further pointed out that Sawe’s journey sends a clear message that limits are meant to be broken, echoing the athlete’s embodiment of the belief that “no human is limited”.
His achievement, Mvurya added, will inspire generations to pursue excellence both on and off the track.

Mvurya also took time to congratulate the marathon star, urging him to savour the moment after years of dedication and sacrifice. “Take this moment in; your hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and determination have paid off. You truly deserve it,” he stated.

The celebratory event brought together key stakeholders in Kenya’s sports sector, including Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Deputy Government Spokesperson Gabriel Muthama, and Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei. Representatives from Athletics Kenya, as well as officials from the aviation sector and senior government officers, were also present to honour the record-breaking athlete.
Sawe’s achievement adds to Kenya’s rich legacy in marathon running and further strengthens the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in global athletics. His sub-two-hour performance rewrites history and sets a new benchmark for future generations of runners.
