Christian Romero completes Atletico Madrid’s move from Tottenham Hotspur
By Joel Masibo, August 15, 2026English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed the departure of defender Christian Romero to Atletico Madrid.
In a club statement on Saturday, August 15, 2026, Spurs said: “We have reached agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Cristian Romero.”
Romero joins Spurs
The Argentine defender was signed from Atalanta in 2021. He was a key player in Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League triumph of 2024/25 and was named captain for the 2025/26 campaign. His 32 appearances in all competitions last season took his tally to 156 in Spurs’ colours.
A Copa America winner just before his arrival, Cuti became only the second Spurs player to win the World Cup when Argentina beat France in Qatar in 2022. He won the Copa America again in 2024 and reached a second World Cup Final this summer.
Born in Cordoba, Cristian began his career at Belgrano and had spells at Genoa and Juventus before signing for Atalanta.
Romero to Man Utd
Recently, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes called on the club to make two significant additions before the summer transfer window closes, identifying centre-back Cristian Romero and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as players who could strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad.
Scholes believes United still have important gaps to address, particularly in central defence and midfield, terming Romero as an important figure to help United at the back following an impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with Argentina in the United States of America.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said: “I think they sorted out the forward areas last summer, but I think they probably need two centre backs. You might laugh at this, and I might get stick for this, but I would go and sign Christian Romero from Tottenham.”
He acknowledged Romero’s disciplinary problems but argued that his defensive qualities could make him a worthwhile acquisition for United.
“I know he’s a nutter, I know he’s got disciplinary issues, but he can be a very good centre half and someone that Michael Carrick could really calm down. They’re talking about 30 or 40 million quid for a player who has been centre half in a World Cup final. I know he’s got disciplinary issues, but I would go and get him. I think they’re desperate for a centre-back; the current ones aren’t good enough.” Scholes said.
