Shattered dreams: Inside AFC Leopards’ 2026 title collapse
AFC Leopards’ dramatic late push for a historic Premier League title came to a crushing halt on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
A stunning 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet in their penultimate fixture officially ended Ingwe’s dreams, handing the championship to their perennial rivals, Gor Mahia.
It was a heartbreaking conclusion to a gruelling, season-long Mashemeji rivalry that will remain a talking point for years to come.
The season had begun with immense promise. Following the club elections in mid-2025, former club legend Boniface Ambani was elected as the new chairman, bringing a fresh wave of optimism to a passionate fanbase.
Ambani’s leadership revitalised a team that had finished a distant fifth the previous season, transforming them into genuine title contenders.
Ingwe started the campaign with quiet resilience. After kicking off with three consecutive draws, they went on an unbeaten run until matchday six, picking up standout victories against the tricky Mathare United and a tough away win against Shabana FC in Gusii.
High and lows
Their unbeaten streak was finally snapped on matchday seven in a 2-0 loss away to Mara Sugar in Awendo.
However, that setback became a springboard. Three fixtures later, AFC Leopards made history by claiming a rare Mashemeji Derby victory over Gor Mahia.
The highly attended clash at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, December 7, 2025, was a commercial blockbuster, raking in a massive Ksh7,011,500 in ticket sales for the home team.

By the halfway mark of the 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season, the table was agonisingly tight.
Record champions Gor Mahia led the pack with 33 points from 16 outings, sitting just above AFC Leopards courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Leopards eventually climbed to the top of the pile following a series of gritty performances. Central to Ingwe’s strength was their refusal to say die, personified by an improbable 2-1 comeback victory against APS Bomet at Nyayo Stadium, where they scored two dramatic stoppage-time goals.
Ironically, while Leopards were resilient, their few defeats were shuddering collapses. Crushing losses to Kenya Police (3-1) and Mathare United (4-1) exposed defensive frailties that characterised their mid-season slumps.
Ingwe’s wheels fall off
With 14 games to go, a narrow, agonising loss to KCB in February 2026 dramatically turned the league tide.
Although Leopards bounced back to avenge themselves with a spectacular 5-1 thrashing of Shabana, a subsequent 4-1 humiliation by Mathare United proved to be the ultimate undoing. The heavy defeat sparked fury among the fans, who stormed the pitch in protest.

Off the pitch, Coach Fred Ambani appealed for patience and continued belief.
Fortunately for Leopards, Gor Mahia were also stumbling, keeping the title race anxious and tight. However, after a bright spell of four consecutive wins, the wheels finally fell off for Ingwe.
A 3-1 loss to reigning champions Kenya Police, followed by a devastating Mashemeji Derby defeat on April 26, 2026, all but proved to be their last straw.
The final blow
The derby defeat was a psychological blow from which Leopards could not recover. Gor Mahia established a crucial buffer at the top, navigating their final five fixtures with renewed confidence.
Even when Gor Mahia dropped points in late draws against Tusker and Bandari, AFC Leopards could only close the gap, rather than overtake them. Ingwe managed to stretch the title chase to the wire with late-season wins over Mara Sugar and Ulinzi Stars, but the miracle was not to be.
On May 24, 2026, APS Bomet ultimately pulled the plug on Ingwe’s fairy tale, handing them a 2-1 defeat that mathematically ended the race. Once again, AFC Leopards came so close, yet so far, leaving Gor Mahia to celebrate another Premier League crown.
