By Viola Kosome, January 29, 2026Kisumu County has officially handed over Moi Stadium to a contractor, paving the way for the start of rehabilitation work to upgrade the facility into a modern sports complex.
Speaking on Thursday, January 26, 2026, Kisumu County Executive Member for Sports, Culture, Gender and Youth Affairs Beatrice Odongo said work would commence immediately following the handover.
She thanked the national government for partnering with the county to deliver the project, noting that the upgraded stadium will play a critical role in nurturing young talent and advancing sports development in the region.
“We look forward to having a modern stadium in Kisumu that will support and nurture the talents of our youth and help them grow,” Odongo said.
She noted that the project will also create employment opportunities for local residents, who will be engaged during the construction period.
According to Odongo, the county government provided the land for the project, and construction will be undertaken by a contractor under the Ministry of Defence’s supervision.

The stadium will cost Ksh800 million, have a seating capacity of 10,000 and is expected to be completed within 12 months.
Odongo assured athletes and teams that alternative venues have been identified during the construction period. Premier League matches will be hosted at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground, while training will continue at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex, Kasagam Secondary School, YMCA and Kisumu Day Secondary School.
Royal Concrete contractor Zain said the company is ready to begin construction, noting that equipment mobilisation is already underway.
“Although the contract period is 12 months, we are optimistic that the project can be completed within six to eight months,” he said.
