Gor Mahia fans evoke memories of Raila Odinga after FKF PL historic 22nd crown

Gor Mahia’s confirmation as the 2025/26 FKF Premier League champions has seen fans of the club invoking the memory of their former long-serving club patron, the late Raila Odinga.

K’Ogalo’s victory was secured without them even kicking a ball after arch-rivals AFC Leopards stumbled to a defeat in an away clash against APS Bomet. The encounter sparked excitement that somehow felt incomplete without Baba’s spirit being invoked.

While Raila’s memory was heavily evoked as an ardent Arsenal supporter following the Gunners’ confirmation as the new champions of England five days ago, Gor Mahia’s domestic triumph took the hype to another level.

The fans honoured their departed patron in the best way they knew how, with a rendition of the famous Lady Maureen Raila Come Home, rending the air in one of the supporters’ gatherings at the Nairobi archives.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who had hosted the team to a luncheon prior to the weekend matches, paid an emotional tribute. Wanga, a close ally of the departed former prime minister, shared her thoughts online:

“Another title, another special dedication to Baba. Congratulations, K’Ogalo!” she tweeted.

A section of players also paid tribute to the former patron right after securing the crown. Winger Shariff Musa took the occasion to celebrate while simultaneously taking a jibe at Mara Sugar FC, referencing the recent fixture friction that surrounded the two teams.

“Baba left us in APS Bomet… By the way… where do we play? Mara ni wajanja, kumbe ni guard of honour mlitaka kutupea na sisi hatujui... We are sorry, we were unfamiliar with your game,” Musa’s jeering statement read.

Meanwhile, midfielder Fidel Origa also remembered the former patron following the championship confirmation with the famous inage of the politician unfurled by the green army loyal fans.

Senior government officials joined the wave of congratulations for the record-breakers, with Principal Secretary for Internal Security, Dr Raymond Omollo, delivering his message to the team.

“Congratulations to Gor Mahia FC, the indomitable Green Army, on being crowned champions of the Kenya Premier League 2025/26 season. To the players, technical bench, and the ever-loyal K’Ogalo faithful, this victory belongs to you. Hongera sana, Champs,” Omollo’s statement read.

Arsenal and Gor tributes

As part of the continuous tributes to honour the former prime minister, who passed away on October 15, 2025, a section of Arsenal supporters also recently visited his final resting place at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi to pay their respects.

The fans flocked to Odinga’s gravesite to celebrate the English club’s historic Premier League title win after a 22-year wait, a spectacular sporting feat that came just a few months too late for the iconic politician to witness in person.

Following his death, Arsenal made a touching gesture by honouring the veteran leader with a posthumous memorial
