FIFA thwarts attempts to oust FKF President Hussein Mohammed
By Joel Masibo, May 26, 2026The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has dismissed attempts by a section of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee members, alongside Deputy President McDonald Mariga, to force FKF President Hussein Mohammed, CEO Dennis Gicheru, and nominated NEC member Abdallah Yusuf to step aside over the 2024 African Nations Championship ( 2024 CHAN) insurance scandal.
In a letter dated May 25, 2026, FIFA stated that the process used to push for the provisional suspension of the three officials failed to comply with the FKF Constitution and therefore could not be recognised.

The world football governing body said the documentation and explanations submitted by the concerned NEC members did not prove that the constitutional procedures required under Article 41 of the FKF Constitution had been followed. In their petition to FIFA, the aggrieved party took the decision to suspend Mohammed and his allies over a reported Ksh42 million embezzlement at the federation.
Failed procedure
According to FIFA, any decision involving the suspension or removal of an FKF official must strictly adhere to laid-down legal and procedural requirements. These include tabling the matter formally before the National Executive Committee, meeting the required quorum and voting threshold, and giving the affected officials a fair opportunity to defend themselves before any action is taken.
FIFA further clarified that compelling an official to “step aside” against their will effectively amounts to a provisional suspension and must therefore comply fully with Article 41 of the FKF Constitution.
“Actions taken outside the clearly defined statutory framework cannot produce valid legal effects within the association,” FIFA stated in the letter signed by Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov.
The governing body also stressed that decisions affecting the leadership and administration of the federation should not be taken hastily and warned that FKF has previously experienced periods of instability that negatively affected football management in the country.

FIFA urged all FKF members and officials to exercise restraint, responsibility, and strict adherence to the federation’s constitution in order to safeguard stability, credibility, and proper governance within Kenyan football.
In addition, FIFA warned that NEC members or FKF officials found to have acted outside the federation’s constitutional framework could face disciplinary action through the appropriate judicial bodies of FKF.
The letter now effectively invalidates the move by the NEC faction seeking the temporary removal of Hussein Mohamed, Dennis Gicheru, and Abdallah Yusuf, while reaffirming FIFA’s insistence on constitutional order and due process within Kenyan football administration.
