FIFA Series: Chelsea star Sam Kerr insists Australia is not taking Kenya’s clash lightly

By , April 15, 2026

Australia national team captain Sam Kerr has said the team will give the final FIFA Series tournament the same seriousness as a clash against any team they have played before.

Speaking ahead of the FIFA Series women’s final against Kenya this Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Kerr gave a snippet of the preparation for the match, stating that they have been preparing as they would against any other top-tier opposition.

Professionals

“There have been many sessions of videos against Malawi and Kenya, as we would have prepared against the USA or England. So for us, this is our job, and we will try to be professional and play every game the same,” she explained.

Kerr further offered a glimpse into the mentality that has seen her evergreen status and maintained her position at the top level—insights that could serve as motivation for Kenyan athletes.

“Playing for the national team is not something that comes easily. I am lucky to have played many caps for the team, but for someone, this is their first cap or camp. As senior players, we have to set that standard and ensure when someone comes to camp, she takes it as an honour. So we don’t take anything lightly or come for training and joke around,” she stated.

Joe Montemurro’s team heads into the final of the four-nation tournament on a high after beating Malawi 5-0 in the opening match, setting up the clash against Kenya, who beat India in the other clash to progress.

Kenya edge India

For Kenya, Beldine Odemba edged a battling India 2-0 to book the final date against the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) giants

While the odds seem to be against a Harambee Starlets team playing on home soil, Kerr emphasised that while the Matildas are the highest-ranked team (15th) against Kenya’s 134th, they will be approaching the game with caution.

“We try as a nation to play our best game, no matter who we play, to play at the best level we can and have the same seriousness to it, no matter where they are ranked in the world,” she stated.

The two teams will face off at 5:30 pm, a clash that will be preceded by the Malawi-India third-place playoff encounter at 2:00 pm.
