Premier League 2026/27: Title contenders and players to watch
By Joel Masibo, August 19, 2026With the 2026 World Cup now concluded, attention has shifted back to domestic football. The Premier League once again enters a new campaign with several clubs harbouring ambitions of lifting the trophy.
Arsenal begin the season as defending champions after finally ending their long wait for the title last term. Manchester City remain serious contenders despite major changes, while Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all have reasons to believe they can challenge near the top.
Here is a look at the five leading contenders and their prospects for the 2026/27 campaign.
1.Arsenal
2025/26 Premier League: Champions – 85 points
Premier League titles: 4
Opening fixture: Coventry City (home), August 21
Major arrivals: Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis
Major departure: Leandro Trossard
Season outlook
After three consecutive second-place finishes, Arsenal finally delivered last season, finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side combined defensive discipline with attacking quality, conceding only 27 goals while losing just five league matches.
Rather than weaken after reaching the summit, Arsenal have strengthened their squad. Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival from Newcastle adds another high-level midfielder alongside Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Martin Zubimendi.
Tzolis also provides Arteta with an additional attacking option on the left.
Strengths
Arsenal’s biggest asset is their overall balance. They are capable of controlling possession, defending effectively, competing in difficult matches and causing problems through set pieces and counterattacks.
David Raya, William Saliba and Gabriel give them a formidable defensive foundation, while Rice supplies physicality and authority in midfield. Odegaard remains an important creative influence, with Bukayo Saka continuing to be one of their most dangerous attacking players.
Guimaraes could make an already strong midfield even more complete.
Weaknesses
Defending the championship brings additional pressure. Arsenal will no longer be the team chasing the leaders; they will be the side everyone wants to beat.
Another concern is their reliance on Saka for inspiration in attack. The Gunners need other forwards to consistently contribute goals and creativity if they are to maintain their standards.
Players to watch
Saka and Rice remain central to Arsenal’s ambitions, but Guimaraes and Tzolis will attract plenty of attention. Tzolis was particularly impressive during pre-season.
Arsenal have already removed the psychological hurdle of winning the league. Their next challenge is proving they can handle the pressure that comes with being champions.

2.Manchester City
2025/26 Premier League: Second – 78 points
Premier League titles: 8
Opening fixture: Bournemouth (home), August 23
Major signing: Elliot Anderson
Major departures: Pep Guardiola, Rodri, Bernardo Silva
Season outlook
Manchester City enter unfamiliar territory following the end of Pep Guardiola’s long reign.
New manager Enzo Maresca faces an especially difficult rebuilding task following Rodri’s transfer to Barcelona. The Spanish midfielder was central to City’s control and balance, making his absence a major issue.
City are also pursuing further midfield reinforcements, including Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, while talented Moroccan youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi is reportedly close to joining.
Strengths
Erling Haaland remains City’s most obvious weapon.
The Norwegian scored 27 league goals last season and claimed another Golden Boot. His ability to turn limited opportunities into goals gives City an advantage in close title contests.
He is supported by a wide range of attacking options. Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku provide direct running, Omar Marmoush offers pace and movement, while Rayan Cherki brings creativity against compact defences.
City scored a league-high 77 goals last season, demonstrating that their attacking department is already capable of producing at the highest level.
Elliot Anderson’s arrival should also add youth and energy to midfield.
Weaknesses
The midfield has undergone significant disruption. Rodri’s departure is particularly damaging, while Bernardo Silva’s exit removes another experienced figure.
Although Anderson can contribute in several areas, replacing everything Rodri provided will be extremely difficult.
Players to watch
Haaland will be targeting another Golden Boot and remains one of the league’s biggest match-winners.
Bouaddi could become another fascinating player to follow if his transfer is completed. The young midfielder has attracted considerable attention since breaking into Lille’s senior team and further enhanced his reputation at the 2026 World Cup.
Anderson will also be expected to make an impact, while the relationship between Marmoush and Semenyo could become an important attacking combination.
City have enough talent to challenge for the championship. However, much will depend on how effectively Maresca handles the departures of Guardiola and Rodri.

3.Chelsea
2025/26 Premier League: 10th – 52 points

Manager: Xabi Alonso
Major signing: Morgan Rogers

Season outlook
Chelsea are perhaps the most difficult side to assess heading into the new campaign.
After several inconsistent seasons, the club have effectively started another rebuilding project, combining substantial spending with the appointment of Xabi Alonso.
The absence of European football could also prove valuable. It gives Chelsea an opportunity to focus almost entirely on the Premier League while their rivals contend with demanding continental schedules.
Alonso’s challenge will be turning a large collection of young players into a balanced and disciplined team.
Strengths
Chelsea’s lack of European commitments could be a major advantage. They should be able to keep players fresher and rotate less frequently than clubs competing across several competitions.
Alonso also brings a clear tactical philosophy. His emphasis on positional organisation, pressing and adaptability could provide the structure Chelsea have lacked.
Weaknesses
Goalkeeping remains a concern. Robert Sanchez possesses ability but has struggled for consistency, and his mistakes proved costly last season.
Chelsea’s enormous squad could present another problem. Managing a first-team group of more than 40 players and establishing a settled starting lineup will require careful decisions from Alonso.
Players to watch
Cole Palmer will be one of the biggest stories of the season. Following a difficult campaign and his absence from England’s World Cup squad, the midfielder will be looking to rediscover the form that saw him register 23 league goal contributions in 2024/25.
Morgan Rogers is another major player to monitor. Following his record £117 million transfer, the England international arrives with significant expectations and the ability to threaten from both central and wide positions.
Chelsea have invested heavily across the squad and now have Alonso in charge. If the new manager can establish consistency and identity, the Blues could become a serious force.

4.Liverpool
2025/26 Premier League: Fifth – 60 points

Major signings: Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo
Major departures: Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate
Season outlook
Liverpool are another major contender beginning life under a new manager.
The 2024/25 champions endured a dramatic decline last season, finishing fifth after suffering 12 league defeats and conceding 53 goals.
Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot, bringing an aggressive and high-energy approach from his previous spell at Bournemouth.
However, Liverpool are also dealing with significant changes within the squad. Mohamed Salah’s departure removes not only a prolific goalscorer but also one of the team’s most dependable attacking outlets.
Victor Munoz has arrived from Osasuna as Liverpool attempt to reshape their attack.
Defensive injuries and an inconsistent pre-season have added to the uncertainty, prompting the club to strengthen with Ronald Araujo and Jeremy Jacquet.
Strengths
Liverpool still possess outstanding individual talent and a strong attacking tradition.
Iraola’s intense style could suit the atmosphere at Anfield, where high tempo and sustained pressure can quickly shift matches.
Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to play an important role after emerging as one of the team’s few consistent performers last season. The revamped attack should also give Liverpool several different ways to hurt opponents.
Weaknesses
Salah’s departure is likely to have a major impact on Liverpool’s attacking output.
More worrying, however, is their defensive record. Conceding 53 goals last season placed them well behind the standards required to seriously challenge Arsenal and Manchester City.
Iraola’s aggressive pressing system could also leave gaps if the midfield fails to maintain its shape.
Players to watch
Szoboszlai could become the central figure of the new era. His energy, creativity and technical ability appear well suited to Iraola’s philosophy.
Munoz should offer pace and technical quality, while Jacquet could establish himself alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence.
Liverpool have enough quality to compete with any opponent, but their defence must improve significantly if they are to challenge for the championship.
Prediction: Fourth
5.Manchester United
2025/26 Premier League: Third – 71 points
Premier League titles: 13
Opening fixture: Hull City (away), August 22
Manager: Michael Carrick
Major signings: Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos
Season outlook
Manchester United begin the new season with genuine reasons for optimism rather than simply relying on their illustrious history.

A strong finish to last season helped Michael Carrick earn the permanent managerial position, while third place secured Champions League qualification.
Carrick has also brought greater stability and a clearer identity to a club that had struggled for consistency in previous campaigns.
Youri Tielemans should strengthen United’s ability to keep possession and control matches from midfield, while Andrey Santos provides another option in the centre of the pitch.
The major question is whether United can take the next step and turn last season’s progress into a genuine title challenge.
Strengths
United have considerable attacking variety.
Bruno Fernandes remains the team’s main creative force, while Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo give the side different attacking profiles.
Tielemans and Santos should also improve the midfield, while Carrick’s continued presence offers the club much-needed managerial continuity.
Weaknesses
Defensive improvement is essential. United conceded 50 league goals last season, compared with just 27 for Arsenal and 35 for Manchester City.
Their squad depth could also become problematic with Champions League football added to the schedule. Having a strong starting XI is not enough to compete successfully across four competitions.
Players to watch
Fernandes remains indispensable because of his creativity, leadership and ability to influence matches.
Tielemans could give the Portuguese midfielder greater freedom to operate further forward, while Santos has the potential to add energy, composure and progressive passing despite his young age.
United are moving in the right direction but still appear some distance from Arsenal and Manchester City.
Unless they strengthen defensively and add more depth, repeating last season’s top-three finish could prove difficult.
