Manchester City vs Coventry City preview: Haaland tipped to guide Cityzens sail through
By Joel Masibo, September 5, 2026Manchester City will aim to maintain their perfect beginning to the 2026-27 Premier League season when they host newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon, September 5, 2026.
Enzo Maresca’s side have collected maximum points from their opening two league matches, while Frank Lampard’s Coventry are still searching for both their first point and their first goal since returning to the top flight.
The meeting will be the first between the clubs in any competition since March 2002, when City recorded a 4-2 victory over Coventry at Maine Road while playing in the second tier under Kevin Keegan.
Manchester City targeting another strong start
City have made an encouraging start to life under Maresca and could win their first three Premier League fixtures for the third time in four seasons.
They opened the campaign with a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Bournemouth at home before producing a much more commanding display at Crystal Palace, where they cruised to a 4-1 victory.
Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland were both on target twice in that success, providing an early indication of the attacking threat available to Maresca.
The new manager’s emphasis on possession has also been immediately evident. City have completed 1,315 passes so far this season, the highest total in the Premier League. They also lead the division for passing accuracy at 90.9%, while 94.6% of their passes have been played short.
Their ability to retain possession under pressure has been equally impressive, with City registering an 85.8% passing accuracy when facing intense pressure.
A return to the Etihad should further strengthen City’s confidence. They have suffered only two defeats in their last 20 Premier League matches on home soil since the beginning of last season, recording 15 wins and three draws during that period.
City have also won their first two home league matches in four of the last five campaigns.
Their record against newly promoted opposition is even more imposing. The Citizens have gone 30 Premier League meetings without defeat against teams promoted to the division, winning 27 and drawing three. Their last such loss came against Leeds United in April 2021.
There is, however, one recent warning for Maresca. His most recent match against a newly promoted side ended in defeat, with Chelsea losing 3-1 to Leeds in December 2025.
Coventry facing an uphill battle
Coventry’s return to the Premier League has been considerably more difficult.
After winning the Championship title last season, the Sky Blues have lost both of their opening league fixtures without scoring.
Arsenal defeated them 3-0 on the opening weekend before Hull City inflicted another setback, winning 1-0 at Coventry last weekend.
Lampard acknowledged after the Hull defeat that his players had “some serious lessons to learn”.
The former midfielder, who spent the 2014-15 campaign at Manchester City, is also under pressure to improve his managerial record. He has won only four of his last 32 Premier League matches as a manager, alongside eight draws and 20 defeats. His record over the past 19 games is even poorer, with just one victory, four draws and 14 losses.
His teams have also failed to record a clean sheet in 18 consecutive matches, conceding 37 goals during that run. His most recent Premier League victory came in May 2023, when he guided Chelsea to a 3-1 win at Bournemouth during his caretaker spell.
Coventry have only endured defeats in each of their first three league games on four previous occasions: 1968-69 in the top division and 1919-20, 1949-50 and 2011-12 in the second tier.
Interestingly, they have never previously lost all three opening fixtures of a league campaign while failing to score in every match.
Despite their difficult circumstances, Coventry can draw some encouragement from their historical record against City. They have avoided defeat in their last eight top-flight meetings with the Manchester club, winning four and drawing four. That sequence dates back to the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93, when City won both encounters.
Team news
Manchester City will continue to be without winger Jeremy Doku, who is recovering from a calf problem.
Maresca has confirmed that Matheus Nunes is available again, with the Portugal international expected to compete with Abdukodir Khusanov for the right-back position.
There could also be a full debut for £125m arrival Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder is competing with fellow new signings Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi for a place in the centre of midfield.
Deadline-day recruit Iliman Ndiaye is also available and can operate on either flank. However, Maresca could retain Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden in the wide positions.
Cherki is expected to continue in an advanced central role behind Haaland. The French playmaker has already been involved in 15 goals during his 20 Premier League starts for City, registering five goals and 10 assists.
Haaland, meanwhile, has an impressive record against promoted teams, having scored 19 goals in 20 Premier League appearances against such opposition.
Coventry remain without Haji Wright, who is dealing with a thigh injury, while Sidiki Cherif is doubtful because of a fitness issue.
Frank Onyeka has recovered from a hip problem and is available for selection.
Bobby Thomas was forced off against Hull after suffering cramp, but the defender is expected to be fit enough to feature. Lampard could potentially move to a five-man defence, which would allow Thomas to operate alongside Aurele Amenda and Ethan Pinnock.
If Onyeka starts, he could form a three-man midfield with captain Matt Grimes and Caleb Yirenkyi, leaving Jack Rudoni and Victor Torp among the substitutes.
Ephron Mason-Clark could partner Taiwo Awoniyi in attack.
