Lampard refuses to panic after Coventry suffer another Premier League defeat
By Joel Masibo, September 6, 2026Frank Lampard has urged Coventry City to maintain their confidence despite suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City that left them without a goal from their opening three Premier League matches on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Coventry travelled to the Etihad Stadium and frustrated the hosts for large portions of the contest, but Erling Haaland’s 26th-minute header ultimately separated the two teams.
Although the newly promoted side remain without a point-producing result from their first three games, Lampard found plenty of encouragement in the manner of his players’ performance against one of the league’s strongest teams.
Coventry defended with discipline and created several opportunities of their own. Taiwo Awoniyi was unable to convert a one-on-one chance, while Jack Rudoni and Ellis Simms also came close to finding the target.
Lampard believed his side had done enough to take something from the match and praised the response of his squad against a team with significantly greater resources.
“Good performance from us. Felt like we deserved something from the game. Our defensive organisation was great. We created moments of pressure, three big chances. The players took on the challenge really well; they are disappointed and so am I.
“I never criticise players, because I understand pressure. This is the level. It’s the brutal reality of it. But we don’t play Manchester City every week. The Premier League is a high level, but on reflection there is a lot of good to use in our mentality.
“Against Arsenal it felt like a first Premier League game in 25 years. Today felt like a competitive Premier League team coming with a clear idea and threat. The fixture list has been tough on us. We can’t lose belief off the back of three games and so we must look forward.”
Lampard’s comments underline his belief that Coventry’s difficult opening schedule should be placed in context. Their return to the top flight has begun with challenging fixtures, but the former Chelsea midfielder believes the team’s performance against City showed they are capable of competing at this level.
The immediate concern remains their lack of goals. Coventry have now failed to score in each of their first three league matches, making their attacking improvement a major priority.
Nevertheless, the narrow margin at the Etihad offered Lampard evidence that his players can match Premier League opposition when their organisation and commitment are at their best.
Rather than allowing the poor results to undermine morale, Lampard wants Coventry to use their performances as a foundation and approach the upcoming fixtures with renewed belief.
