Hull City stun Manchester United in Premier League return

By , August 22, 2026

Hull City handed Manchester United their first defeat of the season in the opening Premier League fixture, downing Michael Carrick’s charges 2-0 in the clash pitting the newcomers against the Red Devils at the KM Stadium on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

The shocking result sealed a first-ever top-flight win for the new Premier League club against the English giants, as the EPL newcomers announced their return to the top flight in emphatic fashion.

Well-taken headers from Semi Ajayi and Nobél Mendy proved sufficient to hand the Premier League returnees a perfect start in a stellar home performance from the centre-back pairing.

History for Tigers on EPL return

Ajayi’s goal came with a memorable milestone: the Tigers’ first goal in the Premier League since May 21, 2017—a 7–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur when they were last relegated. The Nigerian centre-back sent the home team ahead by prodding home after keeper Senne Lammens cleared a goal-bound shot, allowing him acres of space to slot home from close range.

Hull’s aerial dominance was on full show when new signing Nobél Mendy nodded home a second following a set-piece. The goal stood despite Youri Tielemans going down in the buildup and despite new rules guiding set-piece positioning on corners.

The second half kicked off with a change of personnel for the visitors, as Marcus Rashford spearheaded an offensive tactical shift from Carrick. However, despite United dominating possession as they chased the game, Hull remained a potent threat with a fluid display and dangerous counter-attacks.

The hosts were forced into a defensive reshuffle when Mendy was withdrawn for Lucas Herrington, the 22-year-old starlet who featured at the 2026 World Cup. Paddy McNair, a former United youngster, also entered the fray as Hull replaced their entire centre-back partnership.

United kept at bay

Bryan Mbeumo had a shot parried out for a corner after breaking free from a clever pass by Matheus Cunha, with the Hull City keeper guessing right to palm away his strike as frustration grew among the visiting fans.

A resolute Hull side continued to threaten on the counter, but United managed to deal with the immediate danger.

Similar defensive alertness was replicated at the opposite end as the hosts’ revamped backline dealt with a Rashford cross before clearing another Mbeumo delivery following a short corner.

United will now look to make amends when they face Ipswich Town in their first home game at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30, 2026. That clash precedes an encounter against Everton before the Manchester Derby comes to town a week later.
