‘He’s a good striker’ – Tosin Adarabioyo welcomes Chelsea’s new signing Welbeck
By Luke Oluoch, August 7, 2026Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo has backed new summer signing Danny Welbeck to be an instant hit at Stamford Bridge, insisting the experienced forward brings much-needed goalscoring acumen to a young Blues squad.
Chelsea secured the signings of two highly experienced former England internationals in Welbeck, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion, and midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Welbeck already linked up with the team on their overseas preseason tour and was involved in Wednesday’s friendly defeat to Juventus, while Henderson will join the squad upon their return to the UK following his summer World Cup commitments.
Speaking to the club’s official portal, the former Fulham player expressed his delight at welcoming both veterans to London.
“I know, thank God we’ve got Welbs now,” Tosin said with a laugh when asked about the striker. “I have known Welbs for a long time, just growing up in Manchester, so it’s nice to have him with us.”
The 28-year-old defender also shared his admiration for the veteran striker, who will instantly become Chelsea’s oldest player, a relief for Tosin, who had earned the affectionate nickname “Uncle” for previously being the squad’s eldest member.
“I think we have all seen that he scores goals. He’s a good striker at the end of the day, and he is here to help, and the way for him to help is by scoring goals. I’m sure he will do that.”
Beyond relinquishing his title as the squad’s sole elder statesman, Tosin believes the wealth of knowledge Welbeck and Henderson possess will be invaluable for the group.
Bringing much to Chelsea
“They bring pure experience,” Tosin continued. “At the same time, they’re winners, so they’re bringing that winning mentality to the club, and hopefully we’ll continue winning. It’s obviously nice no longer being the oldest, but they’re still young in life, so it’s all good!”
Beyond his old buddy, Tosin, the former Arsenal and Manchester United ace has also been reunited with Joao Pedro, whom they played together at Brighton
Xabi Alonso’s team has endured an inconsistent streak in their pre-season so far, losing to Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur. The Blues opened the run with a 6-2 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers before the back-to-back losses.
