Haaland’s goal against Man United was an error, refereeing body admits

Erling Haaland scored in the 60th minute as City secured a 1-0 victory over United at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR intervened and determined Haaland was onside.
However, Pro Ref later acknowledged that VAR failed to properly consider the involvement of Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez in the build-up.
VAR missed Fernandez’s influence
According to Pro Ref, Fernandez was in an offside position during the attack but did not play the ball.
The refereeing body said this made the offside decision subjective, but VAR should have considered the likely impact of Fernandez’s position before allowing the goal to stand.
“On this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review,” Pro Ref said in a statement.
The body described the incident as an “error of judgement” and confirmed that it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the mistake.
Haaland’s goal ultimately proved enough to hand City all three points in the Manchester derby.
The visitors had been reduced to 10 men earlier in the match after Phil Foden was sent off in the first half, but United failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
The defeat left United frustrated, with the controversial decision becoming one of the main talking points after the match.

Pro Ref said a review of the incident would now take place following the admission.
The decision has also reignited debate over VAR’s role in subjective offside calls, particularly when an attacking player in an offside position may influence play without touching the ball.
For United, the admission comes after the team had already suffered a narrow defeat in front of their home supporters.
For City, Haaland’s goal secured a crucial derby victory, although the manner in which it was awarded is now under further scrutiny.
