Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur: Match preview and  key stats

By , August 22, 2026

Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur will begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaigns with a London derby when they meet at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both sides enter the contest with renewed ambitions, although their preparations and expectations heading into the new season have been shaped by very different circumstances.

Match preview

Tottenham narrowly avoided another difficult campaign last season after finishing 17th for the second successive year. With the club determined to move away from the relegation battle, manager Roberto De Zerbi has been backed heavily in the transfer market.

Spurs have already rewritten their club-record transfer fee twice this summer, spending a combined £185 million (Ksh32.71 billion) on midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. Further major investment could follow, with Manchester City forwards Savinho and Omar Marmoush reportedly among De Zerbi’s attacking targets.

Despite the extensive squad changes, Tottenham enjoyed an encouraging pre-season. They played seven matches without defeat, recording four victories and three draws.

Their summer schedule included a 2-1 victory against Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup. Spurs then rounded off their preparations against Hoffenheim, winning one meeting 3-0 before drawing the other 2-2.

Tottenham will also take confidence from their strong record in opening-day fixtures. They have lost only once in their last 10 Premier League season openers, with that defeat coming against Everton in 2020 when the match was played behind closed doors.

Their record at Brentford’s home ground is similarly positive. Since the Bees returned to the Premier League in 2021, they have yet to defeat Tottenham at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The previous meeting at the venue ended goalless on New Year’s Day, extending the fixture’s record there to four draws from five Premier League encounters. That result also ended Brentford’s four-game losing streak against Spurs.

Brentford’s preparations were slightly less consistent. They were beaten 1-0 by Watford on August 1, but Keith Andrews’ team responded strongly by winning their final four friendlies.

The Bees scored 17 times across those four victories, including a remarkable 7-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt in their final warm-up fixture.

That attacking form will encourage Brentford, particularly after they narrowly missed out on European football last season on goal difference.

Their hopes of continental qualification were damaged by a poor finish to the previous campaign, with just one victory recorded across their final 10 Premier League games. Nevertheless, Brentford remained unbeaten in home London derbies last season.

They will also be encouraged by their recent opening-day record against fellow London clubs, having defeated Arsenal in 2021-22 and Crystal Palace in 2024-25.

Team news

Tottenham have suffered a significant defensive setback before their opening fixture, with Micky van de Ven ruled out by De Zerbi.

That could result in new arrivals Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke forming the central defensive partnership. Andrew Robertson is also expected to make his competitive debut at left-back, while Destiny Udogie is nearing full fitness.

Spurs will be without Xavi Simons, who is recovering from an ACL injury, while Wilson Odobert, Pape Sarr, Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Porro and Mohammed Kudus are also unavailable.

There is better news regarding Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and James Maddison, all of whom have returned to training and could be involved.

Brentford also have a couple of absentees. Sepp van den Berg remains sidelined with a groin problem, while Antoni Milambo is unavailable because of a knee injury.

Otherwise, Andrews has a largely healthy squad, with the team’s attacking players entering the fixture in impressive form.

Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade both scored twice during the 7-0 victory over Frankfurt, while the pair combined for seven goal contributions.

Record signing Mamadou Sangare also scored in that match and is expected to operate in midfield alongside Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen.

Possible XI

Brentford possible XI: Kelleher; Kayode, Ajer, Collins, Lewis-Potter; Sangare, Janelt; Ouattara, Jensen, Schade; Thiago.

Tottenham Hotspur possible XI: Kinsky; Gray, Senesi, Van Hecke, Robertson; Tonali, Fernandes; Moore, Gallagher, Tel; Richarlison.

Prediction

Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Tottenham have some obvious attacking concerns because of their injury list, but their pre-season performances provide plenty of reasons for optimism.

Mikey Moore, Mathys Tel and Richarlison all impressed during the summer, while the availability of Solanke and Maddison gives De Zerbi additional attacking options.

Spurs should therefore pose a major threat going forward. However, their reworked defence could take time to develop an understanding, particularly with new players being introduced to the back line.

Brentford’s impressive scoring record during pre-season suggests they are capable of exploiting those weaknesses.

With both teams possessing plenty of attacking quality but questions at the back, an entertaining draw appears the most likely outcome.
