Arteta agrees new contract to extend Arsenal stay
By Joel Masibo, September 23, 2026Mikel Arteta has reached an agreement with Arsenal over a new contract that will keep him at the club beyond the end of the current season as the club manager.
The Spanish manager, who took charge of the Gunners in 2019, was entering the final year of his existing agreement, which he signed in September 2024.
Although the new contract has yet to be formally signed, an agreement has reportedly been in place for several weeks, with an official announcement expected during the current international break.
Arteta’s future at Arsenal
Arteta had previously indicated that there was no concern over negotiations when questioned about his future before Arsenal’s Premier League trip to Brighton.
“I think we are all very much aligned; whenever the time is right, we’ll get that done. There is nothing to be concerned about.
“I think we both have the same ambition and the same will. So whenever we have time, we’ll get that resolved.”
The 44-year-old has overseen a significant transformation at Arsenal since replacing Unai Emery in 2019.
Under his leadership, Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season after finishing runners-up in three consecutive campaigns.
Arteta also guided the club to only the second Champions League final in their history, although they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout.
His previous honours include an FA Cup triumph and three Community Shield victories.
Deal yet to be formally signed
Sky Sports reported that while the agreement has been reached, the final paperwork remains to be completed.
Sky Sports News’ Gary Cotterill said the club had not yet formally confirmed the agreement but indicated that the two parties had already settled the main details.
“It’s not signed yet. Officially, the club are not saying it has been agreed, but our understanding is that an agreement has been in place for a couple of weeks.
“Mikel Arteta alluded to that on Friday when I asked him about it. He said they are aligned and in agreement.
“So, I believe the deal is agreed. It’s now a case of sorting the formalities, sitting down and signing the contract.
“I expect that to happen during the next international break, potentially within the next two weeks.
“When he signed his current contract two years ago, that was also completed during the international break, on September 12, 2026.
“He tends to compartmentalise things. He has a break, then turns his attention to his future.
“The agreement has been in place for weeks. The only thing left now is to get the contract signed and make the announcement. The full details of the deal should follow in the coming weeks.”
Arteta’s continued presence gives Arsenal further continuity as they look to build on last season’s domestic success and make another challenge for major European honours.
The new agreement will also extend the tenure of a manager who has become central to the club’s rebuilding project since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium.
