Arsenal agree Ksh8.94 billion deal for Ezri Konsa

Arsenal have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign England defender Ezri Konsa for a reported £51 million (approximately Ksh8.94 billion).

The move comes as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defensive options following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Both players are expected to spend a significant period on the sidelines.

Konsa, 28, had two years remaining on his Villa contract and has been a long-term target for Arsenal. The Gunners had also considered Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah but have now opted to pursue the Villa centre-back.

Villa had initially placed a £60 million (approximately Ksh10.52 billion) valuation on Konsa, a figure Arsenal were initially unwilling to match. However, negotiations have eventually resulted in an agreement at a lower fee.

Konsa was left out of Unai Emery’s squad for Aston Villa’s UEFA Super Cup defeat by Paris Saint-Germain last week, further fuelling speculation over his future.

Konsa fits Arteta’s defensive requirements

The England international’s defensive numbers were among the strongest in the Premier League last season.

Konsa recorded more successful ground duels than any other player in the competition, finishing ahead of notable defenders including Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal’s Gabriel.

His ability to operate both centrally and at right-back makes him particularly attractive to Arteta, who needs additional cover in both positions.

Arsenal currently have Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White available as alternatives, with both players impressing during the Community Shield victory over Manchester City. However, White’s recent injury problems have made defensive depth an important consideration for the Gunners.

The importance of having reliable cover at right-back was highlighted during last season’s Champions League final, when Mosquera had to play out of position against Paris Saint-Germain. The young Spaniard subsequently conceded a penalty.

A successful deal for Konsa would therefore address a significant weakness in Arsenal’s squad and leave the Premier League champions close to completing their recruitment plans for the summer.

The remaining question is whether Arsenal can still add the attacking player they have been searching for throughout the transfer window.

Arteta outlines Arsenal’s ambitions

Manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear that Arsenal’s objective goes beyond simply defending their Premier League crown.

Speaking ahead of the new campaign, the Arsenal boss said the club’s ultimate target is to establish itself as the world’s best.

“It’s certainly the ambition of the club and the owners to be the best club in the world,” Arteta said.

He added that achieving that level requires excellence throughout the organisation, from infrastructure and supporters to the quality of the playing squad.

“Those are the ones that win you football matches and the ones that can be decisive when it matters,” he said.

Arsenal begin the new season as favourites to retain their Premier League title after an impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Despite the pressure that comes with being regarded as favourites, Arteta said he is comfortable with the expectations surrounding his side.

“This is part of our industry, and that’s okay,” he said.

The Spaniard explained that his biggest concern is maintaining the hunger and determination within his squad.

“For me, it’s when I look into the eyes of my players and I see that fire, that desire and the will to be better every single day. That’s the only thing that I care about.”

Arsenal are also attempting to overcome a long-standing historical hurdle. The club have not successfully defended a top-flight championship since the 1930s.

Arteta acknowledged the scale of the challenge but believes his squad possesses the determination required to make history.

“That’s an opportunity that we have ahead, and we are very conscious of what it’s going to take to deliver that,” he said.

“But I feel the ambition, I feel the desire, and I feel the ability and the conviction around the team that we can do it.”

With Konsa now seemingly on his way to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal are preparing for another season in which expectations will be exceptionally high.
