Eli Junior Kroupi: Bournemouth’s jewel that Manchester City in title race
By Joel Masibo, May 20, 2026AFC Bournemouth have discovered another rising sensation in teenage forward Eli Junior Kroupi. Within the club, the 19-year-old is viewed as an exceptional prospect, and his performances this season explain why, especially, after his memorable goal denied Manchester City their 9th Premier League title on Tuesday night, May 19, 2026.
Last weekend, he became the first teenager since Robbie Fowler in the 1993-94 campaign to score 12 goals during a debut Premier League season. Should he continue adding to his tally, Bournemouth could secure a historic first qualification for European football.
Key stats
Kroupi’s statistics have been remarkable. He averages a goal every 121 minutes, with only Erling Haaland boasting a superior strike rate in the division. Out of 43 attempts, 20 have hit the target, matching the league’s best conversion record alongside Igor Thiago of Brentford FC. Among teenage players this century, only Romelu Lukaku managed more goals in a single Premier League season, while across Europe’s top five leagues only Lamine Yamal has outscored him among players under 20 this term.

Europe’s elite clubs, including Manchester City, Arsenal FC and FC Barcelona, are reportedly monitoring his progress closely, although Bournemouth are determined to keep him and would reportedly demand more than £80 million for his services.
Although known for his goalscoring, Kroupi is not a traditional centre-forward. Only last season he was competing in Ligue 2 with FC Lorient, where he scored 22 goals and guided the side to promotion. Since arriving at Bournemouth under manager Andoni Iraola, he has shown he can contribute beyond goals, linking play effectively and fitting into the team’s demanding pressing system.
Football ability appears to run in the family, as Kroupi’s father, Eli Kroupi, also played professionally in France for Lorient and Nancy. Bournemouth became aware of the youngster after club owner Bill Foley acquired shares in Lorient. Through their close relationship with the French side, Bournemouth’s recruitment team received glowing reports from figures including Laurent Koscielny, who worked with Kroupi in the academy setup.
Despite attracting interest from several clubs, Bournemouth moved early to secure his signature in January last year, though he remained in France until the end of the campaign. After the transfer was agreed, he produced an extraordinary run of 13 goals in 13 matches to complete Lorient’s promotion push.
Iraola’s doubts
Initially, Iraola questioned whether Kroupi could handle the physical and tactical responsibilities of the No 10 role in the Premier League. However, the teenager adapted quickly, improving his work rate without possession while also displaying excellent movement, dribbling ability and link-up play.
His transition to life in England has also been eased by strong family support, with his parents relocating to Dorset alongside him. Bournemouth additionally provided English lessons, while French-speaking teammates such as Adrien Truffert, Amine Adli and Bafodé Diakité helped him settle into the dressing room.
Kroupi’s technical quality has impressed throughout the campaign. Iraola quickly noticed his powerful shooting during pre-season, something later reflected in spectacular goals against teams including Arsenal FC and Nottingham Forest.

Bournemouth’s excellent recruitment strategy has also seen the club continue progressing despite major departures. In recent windows they have sold players such as Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez and Antoine Semenyo for huge fees, yet remain on course for their best-ever Premier League finish.
Kroupi is also not the only young talent flourishing at the club. Bournemouth recently invested heavily in Brazilian winger Rayan from Vasco da Gama, while midfielder Alex Scott has developed into one of the league’s standout young midfielders.
The teenager’s remarkable form may even earn him a place in France national football team manager Didier Deschamps’s plans for the upcoming World Cup. With injuries affecting other French forwards, Kroupi’s impressive scoring numbers have strengthened his case. Former Under-21 coach Thierry Henry previously revealed he considered promoting Kroupi to the youth setup when he was just 16 years old.
