CECAFA Kagame Cup: Gor Mahia, Vipers SC banter opponents ahead of semi-final duels

Beyond engaging fans and adding excitement, energy, and laughter to balance the sting of the on-pitch action, it creates a new sphere where clubs trade barbs and troll each other with lightheartedness away from the heated pitch.
The 2026 edition of the CECAFA Kagame Cup has continued this trend, with Ugandan champions Vipers SC and their Kenyan counterparts Gor Mahia engaging in recent banter against their rivals.
Gor’s Girlfriend Day troll
As they have done repeatedly at the slightest provocation, Gor Mahia could not let their domestic rivalry slide when CECAFA engaged fans on Saturday, August 1 (National Girlfriend Day), asking who they wished for.
“They are many but number 1 is Otoyo.” the Gor Mahia admin posted, in a direct affront to AFC Leopards, their perennial rivals, whom they silenced to win a record-breaking league title in May 2026.
Meanwhile, Vipers SC’s run in the CECAFA tournament might have come to a halt, but the club made sure to remind everyone of their stature as one of Uganda’s elite football clubs. The multi-time champions on Monday, August 3, 2026, restated their position with the message:
“We live in the Present. They live in the Past. We are not the same.”
The Venoms aptly backed this up with the multiple times they have lifted the Uganda Premier League (UPL), including their recently clinched 2026 crown that sealed a back-to-back double campaign.
Vipers faced banter in their own backyard as well, with sections of the media trolling the club following their loss to APR of Rwanda. The defeat came days after the club got one over Gor Mahia following a 1–0 victory in their Group A encounter.
That win had put the club in a strong position to push for the regional trophy, but their final group defeat to APR saw them eliminated from the competition.
Meanwhile, the competition’s regional rivalries are set to heat up this week as the decisive semi-final stage takes place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Gor Mahia, who topped Group A, is set to face Sudanese giants Al Hilal with a place in the final at stake, as Jamus SC clash with Rayon Sports in the other semi-final duel.
