Ruto hails Team Kenya after impressive Commonwealth Games campaign
By Joel Masibo, August 2, 2026President William Ruto has congratulated Team Kenya for delivering an impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, following the country’s successful medal haul that saw it finish among the top-performing nations.
Kenya ended the Games in 12th place overall after collecting 12 medals, comprising three gold, four silver and five bronze, underlining the country’s continued strength in international competition.
In a message celebrating the team’s achievements on Sunday, August 2, 2026, President Ruto praised the athletes for making the nation proud through their dedication and exceptional performances.
“We are proud of Team Kenya for an outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. With an impressive haul of 12 medals – 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze – Kenya finished 12th overall, once again demonstrating our excellence on the global stage,” Ruto stated.
The Head of State paid special tribute to Kenya’s gold medal winners, who produced memorable displays to stand atop the podium. He recognised Edmund Serem for winning the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang for claiming the men’s 5,000m title, and Faith Cherotich for triumphing in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
“We salute our gold medallists Edmund Serem (3,000m steeplechase), Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang (5,000m), and Faith Cherotich (3,000m steeplechase),” he added.
President Ruto also applauded Kenya’s silver medallists, acknowledging Stephen Ndangiri Kihu for his achievement in the 10,000m walk, Simon Kiprop Koech in the 3,000m steeplechase, Diana Wanza in the 10,000m, and Lilian Odira in the 800m.
“Well done Stephen Ndangiri Kihu (10,000m walk), Simon Kiprop Koech (3,000m steeplechase), Diana Wanza (10,000m), and Lilian Odira (800m) for securing silver.”
The President further recognised the bronze medal winners, highlighting Leonard Kipkemoi Bett in the 3,000m steeplechase, Wyclife Kinyamal in the 800m, Timothy Cheruiyot in the One Mile, Irene Jepkemboi in the javelin, and Joshua Amunga Mboya in the 60kg weightlifting category.
“Bravo Leonard Kipkemoi Bett (3,000m steeplechase), Wyclife Kinyamal (800m), Timothy Cheruiyot (One Mile), Irene Jepkemboi (Javelin), and Joshua Amunga Mboya (60kg weightlifting) for bringing home bronze.”
Ruto concluded by thanking the athletes for their commitment and for representing Kenya with distinction on the international stage.
“We celebrate your outstanding achievements and thank you for flying the Kenyan flag high. Asanteni sana,”Ruto added.
