Arteta apologises after Bournemouth defeat, demands reaction from players

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has challenged his charges to rise from their shock league defeat to AFC Bournemouth and prove their title credentials.

Speaking after the 2-0 home loss to the Cherries on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Arteta described the result as a big punch to the chin.

He expressed his deep disappointment, likening the loss to a punch in the face, and emphasised to his players that the most important factor now is how they react.

Disappointed

“I am certainly disappointed. It is a big punch on the face. That is what I said to the boys. The main thing is how we react to that, and it is going to require a fight from us and how we approach the game afterwards.” he stated

According to the Spaniard, the situation will require a significant fight and a complete shift in how they approach the matches ahead.

Analysing the nitty-gritty of the defeat, Arteta was highly critical of his team’s display, stating they were far below their usual levels and failed to impose themselves.

While he refused to single out individuals as culpable for the loss, he noted that they were extremely poor against a team that was ready to capitalise on every mistake.

The Spaniard was also critical of the team’s display, saying they were far from their levels.

“We were extremely bad against a team that will capitalise on the mistakes you make. There were certain very basic things we did terribly today. There was a lot in our display to look at ourselves.”

He further urged his team to pick themselves up from the defeat.

“We apologise, take it on the chin. That is it. What I am trying to do is to give our best to the club and the responsibility to our players I know that with the atmosphere in our stadium and the supporters, we have a better chance of performing better and responding to this. We have to make a response and pick ourselves up, as we have a game on Wednesday to do that,” he added.

The loss to Bournemouth marked a new low for the London club, who now face a nervy end to the league title chase against Manchester City, who play Chelsea on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in a late kick-off.

This potentially title-deciding defeat marked the fourth consecutive loss Mikel Arteta’s men have slumped to across all competitions this season.

Strikingly, this record is one more than the defeats suffered in their opening 49 games of the season, which stood at only three losses.

Prior to the Bournemouth setback, Arsenal had only lost thrice in 49 games since their season opener in August 2025. The Gunners have endured a sticky path recently, with an inconsistent spate of results seeing them drop out of two domestic cups.

Arsenal’s recent slump

A 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 22, 2026, ended their quest for a season quadruple as Pep Guardiola extended his dominance in English cup competitions.

The setback was compounded a fortnight later as Southampton served the title-chasers a shocking elimination from the FA Cup, further casting more doubt on their title hopes.

Arsenal next heads to the Champions League quarterfinal return leg against Sporting CP, hoping to snap a poor run of four defeats in their last four games in all competitions.
