Akonnor praises Frank Odhiambo after dream return to Gor Mahia
By Luke Oluoch, February 1, 2026Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has lauded the performance of defender Frank Odhiambo following his heroics in Gor’s Saturday, January 31, 2026, victory over Sofapaka.
K’Ogalo’s centre back pairing came clutch in the encounter, with Sylvester Owino and Odhiambo setting the tone for the huge win with a goal apiece.
Odhiambo, a January signing from Sweden, needed only a few minutes to make his first start with a goal.
Ghanaian Ebenzer Adukwaw added the third goal, netting his sixth league goal as Gor romped to another famous league win to move four points clear at the helm of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings.
Akonnor described his performance as crucial for the player’s individual confidence and the team’s cause.
Trained for set pieces
“It is exciting. We trained a lot on our set pieces; we have been encouraging them to attack them. I am very happy for Frank, who scored for the first time; he came and scored, which is good for the team and our momentum. We hope to continue in this run,” he stated.
Reacting to the team’s display, Akonnor noted that his charges were a composed side and fittingly got the result.

“We were tactically sound and played with composure. We have to be ambitious. We scored three in the first half, and we have to be proud of the boys. We did create chances in the second half, but did not score. Assifuah was a menace all around after coming on, and it is unfortunate he did come out for a goal,” he added.
Pressure on
He also commented on the tight proceedings atop the table, acknowledging that the pressure to maintain their levels remains with AFC Leopards hot on their heels.
The results mean a lot, but we still have to keep pushing. The race is not over until it is over. We still have AFC Leopards, who are trying their best to push. What is important is we are focused and keen to maintain our position in the table. Eventually, we will see what happens at the end of it,” he explained.,” he explained.
