2026 Ballon d’Or nominees: Fernandes, Bellingham, and Dembélé headline star-studded shortlist
By Joel Masibo, September 8, 2026The 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist features a strong blend of established superstars, influential midfielders and emerging defensive talents, with players from some of Europe’s biggest clubs competing for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
Among the nominees are Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí, Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé, Bayern Munich attacker Luis Díaz and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Jude Bellingham
England international Bellingham enters the race after another productive campaign with Real Madrid. The midfielder made 52 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists.
Despite his individual contribution, Bellingham did not add a major trophy to his collection during the campaign. He received eight yellow cards but avoided a red card.
Pau Cubarsí
At just 19, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí is among the younger names on the shortlist and has already established himself as a key figure at club and international level.
Cubarsí played an impressive 62 matches, registering one goal and two assists. His season was decorated with three major honours: the World Cup, La Liga and Spanish Super Cup.
The centre-back collected five yellow cards and was sent off once.
Marc Cucurella
Marc Cucurella is another defender whose consistency earned him a place among the nominees. The Spain international featured 65 times, contributing two goals and seven assists.
He also lifted the World Cup, although his campaign included 13 yellow cards and one red card.
His versatility and ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases have strengthened his case for recognition.
Ousmane Dembélé
Dembélé stands out as one of the strongest statistical candidates on the list.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored 26 goals and supplied 14 assists in 51 matches, while collecting only one yellow card and no red cards.
His outstanding campaign was also accompanied by a remarkable trophy haul. Dembélé helped PSG win the Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, European Super Cup, Ligue 1 and French Super Cup.
The combination of goals, assists and silverware puts the Frenchman firmly among the leading contenders.
Luis Díaz
Luis Díaz enjoyed a prolific campaign after featuring for Bayern Munich. The Colombian attacker played 66 matches, scoring 30 goals and creating 23 assists.
His contribution helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup.
Díaz’s numbers are among the most eye-catching on the shortlist, although he also recorded 10 yellow cards and two red cards.
Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes continues to be recognised for his importance to his club despite another season without a major trophy.
The Portugal international appeared in 51 matches, scoring 13 goals while registering an impressive 25 assists.
Fernandes accumulated seven yellow cards but was not sent off. His creative output makes him one of the most productive midfielders among the nominees.
Gabriel
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães also features among the candidates after helping the London club win the Premier League.
The Brazilian made 59 appearances, scoring four goals and providing six assists. He received six yellow cards and was not shown a red card.
His defensive contribution, combined with his ability to pose a threat from set pieces, has earned him recognition among the world’s elite players.
Erling Haaland
The list also includes Erling Haaland, continuing the Norwegian striker’s presence among the game’s biggest individual awards.
Haaland’s nomination adds another prolific goalscorer to a field that already contains several players who produced outstanding attacking numbers during the campaign.
With the shortlist combining individual statistics, team success and performances on the biggest stages, the 2026 Ballon d’Or race promises to be closely contested
