Sections of Thika Road partially closed ahead of Harambee Stars match
By William Muthama, August 16, 2025Thika Road motorists should prepare for traffic diversions on Sunday, August 17, 2025, ahead of the CHAN 2024 match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Zambia’s Chipolopolo.
The National Police Service has advised motorists to plan their travel and follow the designated routes to avoid delays and ensure safety.
The advisory, posted through X on Saturday, August 16, 2025, warns that specific sections of Thika Road will be partially closed.
Motorists from Nairobi CBD heading to Thika, Juja, and Ruiru are asked to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road at Exit 4.
Vehicles heading toward Mwiki should take the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.
Those traveling to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium without vehicle access passes are required to use the Service Lane at Exit 7 or Exit 8.
Traffic effects
The partial closures on Thika Road are expected to slow traffic considerably, particularly during peak hours ahead of the match.

Police stated officers will be deployed to manage traffic and enforce rules, warning that they “will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules.”
Motorists are urged to leave early, follow the diversion signs, and cooperate with authorities to avoid congestion and ensure smooth flow.
Other affected routes
Besides Thika Road, several major arteries will also experience disruptions. Aerodrome Road from Madaraka to Bunyala Roundabout, one lane of Lang’ata Road from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout, and one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala Roundabout will be restricted.

Drivers from Mombasa Road are advised to use Likoni Road–Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
Those traveling from Lang’ata Road should use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
The advisory comes as Harambee Stars aim to secure the top spot in Group A after already qualifying for the quarter-finals.
