A parent of a student at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil has shared an emotional account of the moment she rushed to the school following the tragic dormitory fire, saying she was overwhelmed with fear and shock as she tried to confirm whether her child was safe.

Speaking to Kikuyu YouTuber Paxson Chege Ngunya on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the parent, identified as Mama Kelvin from Githunguri, said she was so distressed on her way to the school that she could barely see clearly, describing how she was lost in deep thought and nearly collapsed before reaching the institution.

She revealed that the journey from Githunguri to Gilgil was filled with panic and emotional turmoil as she feared the worst, especially at a time when many families were struggling to account for their children after the deadly fire.

“I found my daughter safe, and I want to thank God. From Githunguri to here, I was not even seeing clearly; I was lost in thoughts and nearly collapsed. But my child is safe,” she said.

Despite the anxiety, she said she eventually found relief after confirming that her daughter was safe, expressing gratitude to God for sparing her child while acknowledging the pain other parents were going through.

“We must get justice and know the source of the fire. I pray to God to give peace to all other parents of this school like me, and I hope God will give us strength. We have so much grief as parents,” she said.

The parent noted that Utumishi Girls is a highly competitive school where parents and students work hard to secure admission, adding that families had been excited when their children were finally admitted.

However, she said the tragedy has now turned that joy into grief and confusion, calling for answers and accountability over the cause of the fire that has left many families devastated.

She also extended sympathy to parents who lost children in the incident, saying she prays for God to grant them strength, peace, and comfort during this difficult period.

“My name is Mama Kelvin, and I am from Githunguri. We have many of our children here because this is a school where they had to work very hard to secure a slot. I remember we were very happy when they were finally admitted. I also pray that all those who lost children may God grant them everlasting peace,” she shared.
