Uganda urges citizens in Iran to evacuate amid escalating security concerns

By , March 1, 2026

Uganda has issued an urgent advisory urging its citizens in the Islamic Republic of Iran to consider evacuating the country amid a rapidly worsening security situation in the Middle East.

In a security notice released on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Kampala was following developments in the region with grave concern and called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation.

The advisory urged all Ugandan nationals in Iran who can do so to take serious precautions for their safety and leave the country “through any possible means”, citing escalating security risks.

As part of precautionary measures, the government has withdrawn all non‑essential staff from its embassy in Tehran for their safety.

“Consular services are severely limited for the time being as alternative arrangements are put in place,” read the statement.

Ugandans who choose to remain in Iran were advised to inform community leaders of their whereabouts, stay indoors, and closely monitor media and official updates.

Further, the statement noted that information about organised evacuations will be limited until the situation stabilises.

“Due to the extremely fluid situation that is affecting international travel, all Ugandan citizens are strongly advised to suspend travel to the Middle East until further notice.”

This comes shortly after it was confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in today’s massive US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The news came shortly after Iran claimed its leaders were “safe and sound”.

However, Israel has claimed that Iran’s supreme leader was killed in strikes on Saturday, according to two Israeli sources familiar with the matter.

One of the sources said Israel had obtained a photo of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s dead body. The second source said an official announcement is being prepared.

Earlier in the evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are many signs that Khamenei is “no longer with us.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Iran’s president and Supreme Leader are “safe and sound”. But Khamenei has not been seen in public or in videos since the strikes began.
