Sunday weather: Kenya Met predicts rainfall in several regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in several parts of the country on Sunday, May 17, 2026, with some regions expected to experience showers and thunderstorms alongside sunny intervals.

In its daily weather update issued on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the department said rainfall will be enhanced over parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley.

Other areas are expected to experience mixed conditions ranging from light rains to partly sunny skies.

Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley counties, including Kakamega, Kisumu, Kisii, Bungoma, Kericho, and Nakuru, are expected to receive showers and thunderstorms in some areas, especially in the afternoon and evening.

Morning hours are likely to begin with sunny intervals before cloud build-up later in the day.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, and surrounding counties, the forecast indicates light rains in some places at night and morning, followed by partly sunny intervals and isolated afternoon showers.

North and South Eastern regions

The North Western region, including Turkana and Samburu, is also expected to experience showers and thunderstorms in some areas, particularly in the afternoon, with strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots affecting parts of Turkana.

In the North Eastern region, counties such as Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo are expected to remain mostly partly cloudy at night with sunny intervals during the day. However, strong winds are also forecast across some parts of the region.

South Eastern Lowlands and Coastal regions

The South Eastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, are expected to have mostly sunny conditions with isolated morning showers in some areas.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will experience scattered showers throughout the day.

The department also noted varying temperatures across the country, with Lodwar expected to record the highest at 36°C, while colder highland areas such as Eldoret and Nyeri will experience minimum temperatures of 11–15°C.
