Saturday weather: Kenya Met predicts rainfall in several regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall across several parts of the country on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with increased intensity expected in parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley.

In a daily weather forecast issued on Friday night, May 8, 2026, the department said showers and thunderstorms are likely to affect multiple regions, including areas around the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Nairobi County.

Rainfall expected

According to the forecast, counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms during the night and afternoon hours. Areas likely to be affected include Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii, Kericho, Nakuru, Narok, Eldoret, and Bungoma.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, and Meru counties, are also expected to receive showers over several places, particularly in the afternoon.

“Rains expected over a few places in the morning. Showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places in the afternoon,” the agency noted.

Kenya Met added that parts of the North Western region, including Turkana and Samburu counties, could experience isolated showers and thunderstorms later in the day.

Strong winds forecast

Apart from rainfall, the department warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5m/s) in parts of North Western, North Eastern, and South Eastern lowland counties.

Counties expected to experience strong winds include Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Makueni, Kitui, and Taita Taveta.

In North Eastern Kenya, mainly sunny intervals are expected in many areas, although isolated showers could occur in some places during the morning and afternoon hours.

Nairobi forecast

For Nairobi, the forecast indicates showers during the night, followed by sunny intervals in the morning before afternoon rains develop in several areas.

Temperatures in the capital are expected to range between a maximum of 24 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 17 degrees Celsius.

At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu counties, residents should expect partly cloudy conditions accompanied by occasional showers during the day.
