Salasya hate speech case: Nairobi court orders Mumias East MP to run peace campaign on social media for 14 days

A Nairobi court has ordered the Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, to run a 14-day peace campaign through his social media platforms as part of the evidence for his hate speech case withdrawal.

Issuing the directive on Monday, January 19, 2026, Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai also ordered the legislator to hold a joint press conference with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) sought to withdraw the charges against Salasya, stating that they have reached an out-of-court settlement between the legislator and NCIC.

“There is no evidence of compliance provided. I therefore direct that compliance be done within 14 days from today.” The parties must hold a joint, well-publicised conference at a place to be communicated by the NCIC and the accused person,” Magistrate Mutai ordered.

“Secondly, the respondent, that is, the accused person, is to participate in a social media campaign during which the accused (Salasya) shall advocate for peace, cohesion, and integration within the country, and I direct that the evidence of such activities be provided,” Magistrate Mutai added.

The prosecution, through Prosecutor Nora Achieng, had applied to have the matter withdrawn, referencing the agreement between the MP and NCIC to resolve the dispute outside court.

Salasya was arrested in May 2025 following allegations that he made inciting utterances during political rallies in Meru and Isiolo, as well as along his travel route toward Nanyuki, and charged the same month with hate speech contrary to the NCIC Act.

According to the charge sheet, Salasya is accused of publishing inciteful remarks likely to stir ethnic hatred on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @pksalasya, on May 10, 2025, at an unknown location within Kenya.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai, Salasya denied the charges, and a plea of not guilty was entered, and he was released on a bond of Ksh400,000 with an alternative of Ksh200,000 cash bail.

The matter will be mentioned on February 2, 2025.
