Sakaja will be impeached next week, 55 MCAs have signed the motion – Robert Alai

By , February 20, 2026

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing a formal attempt to remove him from office after a faction of Ward Representatives declared they have the necessary numbers to initiate impeachment proceedings.

Speaking to the press outside City Hall on Friday, February 20, 2026, Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai revealed that the push for ouster has gained significant momentum, surpassing the statutory requirements for the motion to be tabled.

Alai asserted that the group of proponents has already secured 13 more signatures than the 42 required by law to present the motion to the County Assembly.

“We need only 42 signatures to ensure that the motion is presented to the County Assembly; we already have 55. I think we have enough numbers, the threshold we’ve hit, and I think by next week we will be able to ensure that we file the motion to impeach the governor of Nairobi,” Alai stated.

The proposed motion is said to list more than 20 grounds for impeachment.

Key among the grievances are the delayed disbursement of bursaries to needy students, the mismanagement of garbage collection across the city, and a failure to implement development projects at the ward level.

The immediate trigger for the revival of the impeachment bid follows a cooperation agreement signed between Governor Sakaja and the National Government at State House on February 17, 2026.

Proponents of the motion, including Alai and South B MCA Waithera Chege, argue that this pact is a surrender of city functions and a clear admission by the Governor that he has failed to manage Nairobi independently.

Despite the claims by the Alai-led faction, the official status of the motion remains a subject of dispute within City Hall leadership.

Nairobi Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi stated on February 19, 2026, that his office has not yet officially received any impeachment documents.

The pro-Sakaja faction led by MCAs led by Anthony Kiragu (Waithaka) has dismissed the signature claims as political speculation, asserting that no credible ouster initiative exists.

The proponents maintain that a 60-day grace period granted to the Governor in late 2025 to address these administrative failures has expired.

With the signature threshold met [as claimed by Alai], the political focus now shifts to the floor of the County Assembly next week.

With the previous 2025 ouster bid having been quashed by President William Ruto and the late Raila Odinga, all eyes are now on whether the ground has shifted enough to make this impeachment stick.
