Police officer Godwin Mjomba to plead to murder charges after mental test

A Nairobi High Court has deferred plea taking for police officer Godwin Mwashuke Mjomba, linked with the fatal shooting of Shukri Adan Ibrahim Issaka in the Mukuru area within Nairobi County.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has lodged murder charges against Mjomba over the shooting of Shukri Adan Ibrahim Issaka on January 11, 2026.

The postponement of the plea came after Nairobi Remand informed the court that Mjomba has not yet undergone a mental assessment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), as earlier ordered by the court.

Appearing before Makadara High Court Judge Muya Martin Mati on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, an officer from Nairobi Remand told the court that they have challenges in accessing the hospital for the test.

“My lord, we received the order to subject him to a mental test, but we have challenges with Kenyatta National Hospital; we are still awaiting communication from them,” the remand officer informed the court.

Meanwhile, the Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Gikui Gichui, informed the court that they have written to KNH asking them to propose a way forward.

However, Counsel Gichui told the court that they are yet to receive any response from the KNH and asked the court to give her one week to work on it.

Earlier, the DPP withdrew murder charges against police officer Patrick Mutunga Titus, who had been arrested alongside Mjomba over the murder of Shukri.

The prosecution informed the court that their decision came after they verified a court order issued by Lady Justice Aburili Roselyne Ekirapa staying the plea taking of Mutunga.

Meanwhile, Mutunga’s legal team did not oppose the withdrawal and urged the court to issue an order directing his release from Industrial Area Remand, where he had been detained.

“We are not objecting; we only pray that a release order be issued to the Industrial Remand Police Station for administration purposes so that we can have him released,” Mutunga’s lawyer told the court.

The court ordered that the officer be released from remand pending the hearing and determination of his application at the High Court Judicial Review Division.

“Patrick Mutunga Titus is hereby discharged; release orders issued,” Judge Muya ordered.

Judge Muya has scheduled the plea taking on February 25, 2026.
