Police arrest person of interest in Ang’ata Barrikoi murder case
By Ascah Mwango, January 1, 2026A person of interest in the fatal shooting of 35‑year-old Charles Korir in Ang’ata Barrikoi, Transmara South, has been arrested.
In a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the arrest was made on December 31, 2025, following the attack on August 13, 2025.
Detectives from the Operations Action Team (OAT), working with Transmara South officers, apprehended the individual in Lolgorian after a months-long manhunt.
On the night of the shooting, residents reported hearing gunshots near Loliondo Farm in the Mashangwa area, along Ngeendalel–Mashangwa Road. Officers who arrived at the scene found Korir shot twice in the head at close range. His body was transferred to Kilgoris Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Korir was ambushed by a group of about eight armed men, who fled through a sugarcane plantation toward Migori County.
“Detectives from the Operations Action Team (OAT), working alongside their Transmara South counterparts, have arrested the key person of interest in the fatal shooting of 35‑year-old Charles Korir on August 13, 2025,” the DCI stated.

The individual was arraigned before Kilgoris Law Courts but could not raise the required Sh100,000 cash bail, and was subsequently remanded at Lolgorian Police Station. The case is scheduled for mention on January 13, 2026.
“Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing more leads to apprehend his accomplices who remain at large,” the DCI added.
The killing comes amid a history of violence and insecurity in Ang’ata Barrikoi, where previous land and communal conflicts have resulted in several deaths. Local leaders and security agencies continue to urge peace and dialogue while addressing the underlying causes of tension in the area.
Authorities said they are following up on forensic leads and intelligence to identify and arrest the remaining individuals believed to have participated in Korir’s killing.
