Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has removed her hat to thank President William Ruto.

In a post on X on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Passaris said that the move to lower taxes is very much welcome.

She went on to also thank National Treasury CS John Mbadi.

Passaris expressed that the income tax exemption for Kenyans earning below Ksh30,000 is a real relief for over 1,000,000 citizens.

“For low-income earners, every shilling counts. This step will ease the cost of living and restore dignity by putting more money in the pockets of hardworking Kenyans,” she said.

The lawmaker highlighted that the policy would allow families to meet daily needs without constant financial strain.

President Ruto had earlier outlined the plan, stating that more than 1.5 million workers earning Ksh30,000 or less per month would be exempt from income tax.

Additionally, for a further 500,000 earners receiving up to Ksh50,000, the tax rate will be reduced from 30 per cent to 25 per cent.

This measure is part of the government’s wider strategy to ease the cost of living for ordinary Kenyans.

Boosting household finances

Passaris noted that the move would particularly benefit families struggling with rising living costs.

“This relief is timely. It ensures that hard-working Kenyans can save more and manage their households better,” she said.

She called on other stakeholders to continue supporting policies that directly uplift citizens and improve economic stability at the grassroots level.

The Nairobi Woman Representative also urged citizens to stay informed on the changes and take full advantage of the new tax measures.

The initiative has been widely applauded by low-income earners who hope it will provide much-needed financial breathing space in the coming months.
