Nairobi expressway free access extended to Saturday, March 7, amid flood chaos
By Valerian Khakayi, March 7, 2026In response to the ongoing flooding on Nairobi roads, MOJA Expressway has extended its free access period.
In a statement issued today, the company says motorists can now continue using the Nairobi Expressway free of charge until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Officials said the extension aims to help motorists navigate affected and waterlogged sections quickly and safely, while also reducing traffic pressure on surrounding roads that have been heavily impacted by the heavy rains.
“In light of the current flooding situation, and with public safety as our highest priority, the Nairobi Expressway will be FREE of charge until 6:00 a.m. on 7 March 2026,”the Moja Expressway statement reads.
“This temporary measure reflects our commitment to supporting the public during this period by helping motorists pass through affected and waterlogged sections as quickly and safely as possible, while also easing traffic pressure on surrounding roads.”
In addition, motorists are urged to drive cautiously, follow traffic guidance, and remain alert to changing road conditions at all times.
MOJA Expressway emphasised that public safety remains its highest priority during this period.
“We kindly urge all motorists to drive with caution, follow traffic guidance, and remain alert to changing road conditions at all times. Thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway,”Moja Expressway statement reads.

Friday free access
MOJA Expressway had earlier informed motorists that due to the ongoing downpour and flooding along the A8 (Mombasa Road), it was extending free usage of the Nairobi Expressway from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
“Dear motorists, due to the ongoing downpour and flooding along the A8 (Mombasa Road), MOJA extends free usage of the Nairobi Expressway to all motorists from 2100 to 2300 hrs. In case of any emergencies, please call our rescue hotline 0111039888,” Moja Expressway announced.

Floods
Videos and images circulating on social media show motorists wading through waterlogged roads and cars partially submerged in floodwaters, highlighting the scale of disruption caused by the rains.
The flooding caused massive traffic jams in key areas within the Nairobi Metropolitan, disrupting the evening commutes.

Apart from road closures, the Kenya Red Cross disclosed, the ongoing heavy rains have caused property damage, displacement, and distress among affected communities.
“Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several parts of Nairobi and surrounding areas, leading to road closures, property damage, displacement and distress among affected communities. Affected areas include Pipeline & Embakasi (Kware Road cut off), Mukuru (Kwa Njenga, Reuben, Viwandani), Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, South B & South C, and Nairobi West,” the Kenya Red Cross statement reads.
“Lang’ata, Umoja 3, Chokaa, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, Loresho and parts of Westlands. Major roads affected: Sections of CBD roads, Uhuru Highway, Mbagathi Way, Mombasa Road (South C–JKIA Exit–Kyumbi), Thika Superhighway (Githurai–Kahawa Sukari), Jogoo Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road and Lang’ata Road near T-Mall. Kenya Red Cross teams are conducting search and rescue operations in affected areas.”
