Motorists stuck in heavy traffic on Thika Road after accident

The accident was reported near the Roysambu flyover on the main carriageway, affecting the movement of vehicles along the busy road. Heavy traffic quickly built up on the remaining carriageway and service lanes as matatus and other vehicles were delayed.
The incident alert issued at 11 pm identified the location as Thika Road, Roysambu, near the flyover and main carriageway.
Accident causes traffic buildup
According to the incident alert, the accident led to the temporary closure of parts of Thika Superhighway. The closure left motorists using the remaining available sections of the highway and service lanes, where traffic continued to build up.
The situation was captured in videos seen by K24 Digital at around 11.30 pm. The footage showed several cars lined up along Thika Road, with vehicles occupying the road next to one another.
A good number of people were also seen walking on foot in the videos. The pedestrians were seen making their way along the road as vehicles remained caught up in the heavy traffic.
By the time of publishing, authorities had not yet provided information on whether anyone had been injured or killed in the accident. Further details on the incident were therefore not immediately available.
The incident at Roysambu therefore affected the normal movement of vehicles along the highway. Matatus and other vehicles were among those delayed as motorists tried to navigate the affected section.
The alert stated that the remaining carriageway and service lanes had experienced heavy traffic following the accident. It also noted that parts of the main highway had been temporarily closed.
Some of the affected residents have called on various authorities to consider expanding the highway due to the large population and vehicle volume in that area.
“KeNHA Thika Superhighway kuna jam kila siku. Govt should expand that road ASAP,” one X user, Idriss Galgalo, wrote.
“What’s happening hapa Roasters, Thika Road? Traffic haisongi mazee,” Kelvin Mwendwa wondered.
Thika Road is known for heavy traffic, with the movement of vehicles often affected when an incident occurs along the busy highway. A simple accident that blocks part of the road can quickly cause a major traffic buildup as motorists are forced to use fewer available lanes.
Just last month, motorists experienced heavy traffic for hours on Thika Road after a morning snarl-up affected movement along the busy highway.
The traffic was reported along the stretch from Weteithie to Delmonte, with motorists facing delays on the road. The affected section was on the Thika Superhighway, which connects motorists travelling between Nairobi, Juja, Thika and other parts of central Kenya.
