Mosiria vows action as illegal dumping returns to Likoni Road after his tenure

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has promised swift action following the return of illegal dumping at a site along Likoni Road.

The site had been closed months ago during Mosiria’s tenure as Chief Officer for Environment, bringing relief to residents and nearby businesses. However, Mosiria said recent reports indicate that the area has once again become a hotspot for illegal waste disposal, raising serious health and environmental concerns.

“Yesterday, I received a complaint from a company located next to the illegal dumping site along Likoni Road. They reported that after months of peace following the closure of the dumping site when I was serving as the Chief Officer for Environment, the illegal activities had resumed,” Mosiria stated.

In a post shared via his X account on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the chief officer said he personally visited the site to assess the situation and confirm the reports.

He described a disturbing scene, noting that the area had become heavily polluted in a short period. The piles of waste, according to him, pose significant health risks due to the poor air quality, which is unsafe for human breathing.

“Indeed, the dumping has started again. The area is heavily polluted, and the air quality alone is unsafe for human breathing,” Mosiria stated.

Mosiria revealed that he intends to work closely with the county’s Environment team to ensure that immediate corrective measures are taken. He also emphasised that the authorities would review the licenses of private waste service providers involved in the illegal dumping, holding them accountable for violating environmental regulations.

“I will be taking this matter up with the Environment team for immediate action to have the site closed permanently. I will also follow up on the cancellation of licenses for the private waste service providers involved, who are illegally dumping garbage at this site,” Mosiria stated.

The county chief officer further stressed that the government cannot allow individuals or companies to disturb Nairobi residents in the pursuit of profit, especially when such actions endanger public health and degrade the environment.

He reiterated that during his tenure, the county had proposed structured solutions for informal waste collectors, providing them with an opportunity to earn a living legally and safely.

“While in office, we had proposed a proper solution to help these groups establish a well-organised Material Recovery Facility, where they can earn decently without polluting the environment. That offer for structured support and full compliance still stands. As the County Government, we must ensure all our clients coexist,” Mosiria stated.
